to suggest "taxt" as the past participle of the verb "to text"?

I find it unsettling when people use "text" as the past participle ("yesterday I text my mum").

But single syllable verbs ending in t or d often have irregular past participles. Eg "texted" or "sitted" or "hitted" is a bit of a mouthful.

I think an "e" often gets turned into an "a" in these situations.

So, whaddaya reckon, MN? "Taxt"? If we all use it, it'll definitely catch on.

I like it! Makes sense.

PPie10 · 28/05/2016 21:14

Sounds cringe.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/05/2016 21:14

YANBU

A perfect solution.

Now all you have to do is make it catch on.

ScarletOverkill · 28/05/2016 21:15

Yes

Flannelmcpoppety · 28/05/2016 21:16

Thanks!! Let's start saying it.

Ppie - it only sounds cringe because you're not used to it...it's just the same as sit/sat. Or shit/shat but this may not help my cause.

Noooooooo, it'seems too taxing. 😉

SisterViktorine · 28/05/2016 21:18

No I don't like it.

What about 's'ext'- contraction of 'sent a text'.

No. that's a complete sentence

Flannelmcpoppety · 28/05/2016 21:21

Dunno - I thought I meant past participle...but grew up not under Gove/Nick Morgan so not too hot on the old grammatical terminology tbh Grin

No - is never a complete sentence. Just a downright rude answer.

WorraLiberty · 28/05/2016 21:24

Oh no.

It reminds me of the 1980s, when teens couldn't walk in certain areas for fear of getting 'taxed' for their trainers Grin

I think text is default now, and TBH I don't see an issue with it, then again I'm not a humanities degree grad with a severe case of pedantry so I'm not the target audience.

Are they quite often the same form, in English? Part participles and perfect/imperfect?

"Having sat on" "I sat on it"

Etc? Anyway, I suggest we use taxt for both.

"Texted" is a mouthful? It's two syllables. Two.

Are we really living in a world where two syllables is just asking too much of people?

Just to be clear - I don't mind text from a pedantry form of view. I think it's ok. But since it's a brand new verb, if we can influence it, I think I'd rather go for the irregular sort that changes a bit so you can tell the difference between present and past.

Yeah, cat, but it's two syllables with all those ts in there.

I don't think it's BU to want to irregularise it so it can trip off the tongue a bit more easily. The question is how.

I have to go and watch Muskehounds now, unfortunately; back later.
