Is a Fitbit (or equivalent) worth the money?

A friend of mine has just got one and raves about it. I'm tempted to jump on the bandwagon and wondered if anyone has any views before I splash out on something I may not need/is just a fad!! Thanks xx

I've had one for about 18 months and it really does help me move more (and thus lose weight / get fitter). For those complaining about faults - FitBit's customer service is pretty good.

Because you have mentioned UCAS points it sounds to meet like this is lessons for LAMDA drama and speech exams. This would be just like the peripatetic music lessons. My son's school does it and so does his drama school. Even at the drama school those that do the LAMDA exams have to pay extra for LAMDA lessons. They are not necessary at all and only count as minimal UCAS points in some universities. Most universities are only interested in A level exam grades.

Sorry wrong thread!

Don't want to hijack, but is there a particular one you would recommend? Lots of people have mentioned the Charge HR...

We were given a FB flex. DH & I both disliked it because it was obviously very inaccurate in every way (I tried all the calibration tricks).
Some folk do love them, though. Maybe get one 2nd hand so you don't have to pay full price to try & see if it suits you?
Friend has a jawbone she's very happy with, too.

I got a Fitbit flex which I keep in a stretchy wrist thing (with a zip pocket!) which is around my ankle (I'm a nurse and can't wear anything on my wrists). It's been amazing! I sync it with myfitnesspal and simply using the apps, I've lost over 10kg by eating sensibly and upping my steps. I really recommend it! I also sync it with bounts :)

Well to be fair you're never going to get one that's dead on accurate. You're just supposed to use it as a guide/tool, for something dead on I would imagine it would have to take form as a chest strap and clag on things. For eg I see 12.500 steps as definitely meeting my 10,000 goal that and reducing your calories you still see a result.

As long as it gets you moving a lot more than you are used to is a result.

Ive got the flex and it suits me, although I am tempted by the HR charge.
I miss it when I'm not wearing it. Love the alarm function too.
I've had mine since Xmas and love it.

I've got the Fitbit One, it cost me £70 3 years ago and it's still going strong.

I love it. I walk loads, run, Zumba and lots of my family/friends have them so we do weekly challenges.

I've lost 2 stone and kept it off because of my Fitbit and being active.

Don't hesitate in buying one

saffynool · 28/05/2016 21:19

I have a Fitbit flex and love it. Actually bought it for Dp but he never used it, so now it's mine Grin

I am the least motivated person on the world where exercise is concerned and the Fitbit has got me moving. I walk tonnes now, just to get my steps in. Also love the silent alarm for mornings, much more civilised!

foxessocks · 28/05/2016 21:30

I'm a cheapskate so I spent 8.99 on a basic pedometer which clips on my waistband. It seems to work perfectly fine and motivates me to walk more! My friends have fitbits and have a league table going which sounds scarily competitive to me!

MalmMumma · 29/05/2016 12:04

Thanks for all the comments. I got a Garmin and love it already. Managed 8,000 steps so far today! Hopefully my enthusiasm will last!

Just saw you have bought one but wanted to add that my phone (Samsung) has an app for measuring steps and minutes of activity. The accuracy seems about as good as Fitbit when I've compared with a friend on a walk.
