Is someone says they 'fancy' you?

Is it just me or would that get your back up? I am single and over 50 and I am amazed at how many grown men say this .
I understand I should feel flattered but to me it sounds so immature and silly

I'm not a native speaker, so can't really understand what the exact connotations of this are, but ... I like to use "youthspeak" to make things look less serious.

Like, if you're not really close to someone, but want to tell them you find them attractive, you'd not say that you love them, but use a different word.

Could be why those men say it - I imagine those men aren't all ones that you are in romantic relationships with. Wink

I'm not sure it is youth speak though. Or at least current youth speak.

I suspect it might be the equivalent of your gran asking if you were courting when I was a teenage. Or the horror or my mum asking 'did you get a lumber?'

Maybe it is a linguistic thing. I had a guy whose English wasn't the best and he had a very odd way of saying quite a lot of things. I swear part of it was google translate. I wouldn't care too much. Like one respondent said, what actually would be acceptable?

Vestal Virgin, thanks for your insights.

OP, I just asked DS1 and he said that teenagers still say "I fancy you". But more predominantly they'd say, "I've got a crush on you". Which I hate because it's American...

Can't you just take it as a sweet compliment and not any deeper than that? Basically, you're hot! :)

Ive got a crush on you is awful Whatsgoing. Yes i have decided to take it as a compliment and stop being so nitpicking

I think if it was said in the context of other nice things that make you feel like more than a pair of boobs then it's not too bad but on its own it's not enough of a reason for me to be involved with someone.

cupidsgame · 28/05/2016 09:43

I can only imagine teenage boys actually using those words. With me it was always "my mate fancies you", whereas the lad that did fancy you might say, "will you go out with me". The compliments would normally come once you'd started "going out" with them.
