I feel like an idiot when wearing sunglasses

I love sunglasses on everyone else and think they look SO cool, but I have tried some but always feel so stupid that I have to whip them off so nobody sees me!
I don't own a pair but wish I was brave enough to wear them, I saw loads of people today with them on and they looked great.

Does anyone else feel embarrassed in sunglasses? Do you just get over it after a few minutes, should I buy a pair?

Start by wearing them in the car when you are driving and move upwards from there!

Charley50 · 24/05/2016 22:21

Oh god I've got a sunglasses issue too. My face is quite thin and I find it hard to find ones that aren't wider than my face. I've just started forcing myself to wear them this year as I'm a grown up and I know it's the right thing. Also it's true that in the sun you look weirder without sunglasses on than with.

AdoraKiora · 24/05/2016 22:25

I wear them all the time, all year round.

I can rarely drive without them on.

Mornings are hard without them.

I'm like a vampire on the school run - it has to be raining before they come off Grin

80sMum · 24/05/2016 22:36

I wear transitions glasses with UV protection all the time, so even on a relatively cloudy day I am wearing "sunglasses" when outdoors. I couldn't function without them. My eyes can't cope with bright sunlight.

It must be lovely to be able to just buy a pair of sunglasses or to have several different styles. I only ever have my one pair of multifunctional glasses that I wear every day. They're varifocals, glare reduced, anti-reflective, anti-scratch, UV protected and transitions lenses - and they cost a small fortune so I can only ever justify having one pair at a time!

NicknameUsed · 25/05/2016 07:18

I had some transition glasses, but they were useless. They don't work in the car, they don't go dark enough in bright sunlight and they don't go light enough in dim light.

I have a pair of glasses that have magnetic dark lenses that attach to them. They are so practical for walking around and driving. They aren't the most stylish, but when you have crap eyes like mine when you find something that works for you it is a bit like finding the holy grail.

Natsku · 25/05/2016 07:29

I feel like an idiot when I wear them too, especially as my head is so damn small that I have to wear children's sunglasses! But I still wear them anyway as I'd rather look silly than be squinting all the time because of the sun shining in my eyes.

NicknameUsed · 25/05/2016 07:33

Here is an explanation why not wearing sunglasses is a bad idea.

Don't buy cheap ones from Primark unless they offer proper UV protection.

CaurnieBred · 25/05/2016 07:49

I really don't understand how some peoples' minds work at times: I think I was born with far too practical a mindset!

They are called "sun"glasses, not "summer"glasses: so if it is sunny, no matter what month it is, mine get worn. When I wore glasses for vision, before I had lasik, I had reactalight lenses.

DD has bright blue eyes which are really susceptible to damage so she has been encouraged to wear sunglasses since she was a few months old.

80sMum · 25/05/2016 07:57

nickname I agree with you about the limitations of transitions lenses; they are nowhere near as good as sunglasses. But I can't justify spending another £700 on a second pair of glasses. I might investigate clip-on for use in the car, not sure if they're still available.

IfTheCapFitsWearIt · 25/05/2016 08:16

I also really struggle to wear them, they feel uncomfortable, I feel like a prize prick, and I find talking to people whilst wearing them really hard. I always end up putting them on the top of my head when in conversation.

I know it's irrational, but that's just the way I feel.

I have found some subclasses that suit me, took a long time to find so each year I try to wear them as much as I can. But it's really hard.

VulcanWoman · 25/05/2016 08:50

Have you all using Transition lenses given them a good go, because my mum had some, didn't seem to be working very well, the optician said they take a while to develop over a few days. Seemed much better after that.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 25/05/2016 11:26

they do take a few days to get into the swing of things, but they are not good for driving, and there is always the whole "Mafia Wedding" thing going on when they are dark because it is sunny but you mightn't ordinarily want your sunnies on.

Just wanted to update this thread and thank you all. I have spent the last few days trying on loads of sunglasses and found a pair I really liked in Boots. When we went up to buy them today, sunglasses were half price so I am delighted with them!

I even wore them in the car for 10 minutes so it's a good start! Thanks very much for the help.

Well done, stars!!! What's next - a big floppy sun hat Grin?

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 02/06/2016 23:30

My DP says he feels like he's showing off when he wears sunglasses! It's like they are just a fashion statement rather than being useful. I wear them a lot as I have sensitive eyes. I think it's a bit like people who wear them inside or at night, except he feels like that all the time Grin

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 02/06/2016 23:31

Ifthecapfits I was told as a holiday rep in my youth that you should take off your sunglasses when talking to customers so that they can see your eyes, so not daft at all!

Glad you're feeling the love OP Smile
