To be really scared of filling tomorrow

I am having a filling tomorrow.

It is only the second one I have ever had (mortified!) but I am terrified and half considering cancelling (I don't think I will.)

I have a REALLY strong gag reflex and I'm worried about choking.

Please reassure me it's not that bad Shock

How did you get on, Wetbankhols?
Was thinking of you while sat in the dentist's chair. Grin

I had a root canal on one of my back teeth. I also have a strong gag reflex and getting the X-rays done was horrible Sad Don't worry OP, you won't choke and you can always ask your dentist if you can take a few seconds to compose yourself/swallow etc

OTT but why do clinicians always describe an injection as a 'sharp scratch?'
Do they not know what 'scratch' means?

I've also had small fillings done without anaesthetic, much better, the worst bit is having a frozen lip/jaw and having to be careful about hot drinks and food.

The dentist will let you know if you really need an anaesthetic and will err on the side of caution and give you one if it could possibly hurt.

The injection hardly hurts. I don't like the really loud slow drill so I tell them and they use it as little as possible and use a smaller one. You might prefer the louder slower one. They will do their best to make it as easy for you as possible. I generally only have replacement fillings these days - a tooth breaks or a filling falls out (or both) and then I need a new filling.

I gag a lot too and cleaning my teeth is a bit of an ordeal. But I find going to the dentist and hygienist is ok.
