WWYD/AIBU? Incredibly rude staff in a pub last night

This is a pub that I go to once/twice most weekends and I probably spend about £250/month there (serves really nice food!) It's my favourite pub and I would be absolutely gutted if I wasn't allowed back.

BUT, last night I was in there and drinking gin and tonics with a whole group of people. The rounds got confused and I ended up with two drinks in front of me, the tonic water was only poured in halfway. I finished the first and went to pick up the second and I noticed what looked like a piece of dirty string tied in a circle floating in the top of the drink. I fished it out and when the barmaid came over I explained what had happened and asked for a fresh drink. She rolled her eyes, got the drink and then asked me to pay (£5). I said - er, hang on a minute, I shouldn't have to pay for this. She then accused me of putting it in there myself/allowing somebody else to and insisted that I'd already drunk half of it. I explained politely exactly what had happened and she refused to back down and stomped off to her the owner. The owner came out and wasn't interested in anything I had to say, she just rather aggressively said if I didn't pay then I wouldn't be allowed to drink in there again. I was absolutely taken aback, she walked off and I thought to keep the peace, I would pay. It was 5 fucking pounds and I'd already paid a bill of £50 that night! Quite why they thought I was trying to get one free G&T is beyond me?! I was not rude or confrontational but I did stay firm.

I'm really shocked because previously I have got on really well with the barstaff there, I count some of them as among my friends. And there was an incident a few weeks ago where my friend and I had lunch there and when we left each thought the other had paid. I went back in a few days later and explained what happened and they had no knowledge of the bill but I told them what we'd eaten and drunk and they took the payment for it there and then. The staff were incredibly grateful that I'd come back and paid, even when they couldn't produce a bill for me.

This is literally the first time anything bad has happened in this pub but to have two members of staff being aggressive and rude isn't something I feel I can ignore. It's even more upsetting that the owner took this stance too. As I said before, I really don't want to never go back there but I am very cross that they didn't believe me, or apologise or offer me a replacement drink. I'm really at a loss over what to do! I thought of TripAdvisor but last night aside, I've always had a great time in there.

I think I would go back , in the cold light of day and speak with the manager about this. Explain what happened, that you couldn't drink your drink as it was not clean, and as it was a replacement, genuinely didn't feel you should pay for the replacement. I would say you value them as a regular and felt quite hurt at the way you were treated as if you were lying. Ask what does she think about this as you would rather clear the air and keep going there.

Leavemealone2016 · 22/05/2016 19:53

And if you have a poor response, don't go there after that.

GabsAlot · 22/05/2016 19:54

as a regular they should have taken your word for it-not good s over half a drink

they obviously dont value your custom i wouldnt talked to like that

ghostyslovesheep · 22/05/2016 19:56

£5 for a G+T

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/05/2016 19:58

I do the same Madame.

Sapph1r3 · 22/05/2016 20:15

Thanks for the replies. I really don't want to leave a bad review on TripAdvisor because as I say, they are generally excellent. But if it comes to it then I will. I think perhaps I'll go in during the week and have a chat. It won't feel the same to go in there if I don't now. As for the forgotten bill, it was a genuine mistake that they didn't even realise had happened. They would never have known if I hadn't gone and explained.

It did happen at the end of the night. I didn't pay for the drink so didn't immediately look at it and half the little bottle of tonic water was poured in, meaning the liquid was only up to halfway, and the rest was in the bottle by the side of the glass. It was perfectly obvious that it was a freshly poured drink.

I wouldn't go back. They were rude and the barmaid accused you of lying.

I wouldn't want to give them my custom again.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 22/05/2016 20:17

It's a one off and it's a fiver, OP. Honestly, it's annoying but I'd let it slide.

"The owner came out and wasn't interested in anything I had to say, she just rather aggressively said if I didn't pay then I wouldn't be allowed to drink in there again."

Tbh, that's the point at which I would have walked out.

AdrenalineFudge · 22/05/2016 20:19

I'd vote with my feet personally. I can see why you feel aggrieved but leaving a negative review on Trip Advisor seems a bit OTT.

Sapph1r3 · 22/05/2016 20:20

Ps. As regards the amount of money I spend in there, it's a gastropub type place in an affluent area so prices reflect this, unfortunately! £5 for a single G&T and £7-8 for a double, depending on which gin it is. Average main course is £15 which isn't too bad but a meal for four, plus drinks, can easily come to £100.

I would totally sack them off and warn people on trip advisor . In this day and age they should be more appreciative of their regular customers.

MizK · 22/05/2016 20:24

YANBU.

AugustaFinkNottle · 22/05/2016 20:24

If someone threatened to bar me from a pub, that would be the last they'd see of me. Given the money they'd lose, it's quite an expensive mistake to make on their part.

GabsAlot · 22/05/2016 20:49

at that level then they should be more inclined to belive u a regular who gives them good custom

Cantgetmyoldnameback · 22/05/2016 21:58

Years ago I had a birthday dinner in a local restaurant. They brought us a stone carafe type thing of red wine. A few minutes later we discovered a fag butt floating in the carafe. When we complained they said that one if our party (all non-smokers) had deliberately put it in there.

ethelb · 22/05/2016 21:59

It was shit customer service. As other people have suggested, go in in the cold light of day and speak to someone who recognises you.

Explain that they threatened to bar you after a simple complaint and see how they respond.
