Especially Fenella. She was awful! God...the TV we watched (us old people!)

AIBU to think kids tv is far less scary now?

The only kids programme that ever really scared me was a series called Changes, where the electricity pylons came to life. Think it was on in the mid 70's for about 6 episodes.

"The Changes (1975)
This mildly frightening drama sees a Britain where a sudden enveloping noise emanating from all machinery and technology causes the population to destroy them. The resulting upheaval displaces many people and reverts society to a pre-industrial age where there is a deep suspicion of anyone who may be harbouring machinery. Even the words for technology are taboo. The remnants of modern technology that escape destruction (such as electricity pylons) produce a physical and sometimes violent repulsion among those left in Britain. Young Nicky Gore who has escaped the destruction and chaos tries to look for her parents and solve the mystery behind what's going on in the country"

There was another drama series too called Touch and Go which was quite scary as well. I think that was the title but I cant find anything about it. It was two children who were in a naval town in the UK (possibly Portsmouth or Plymouth) and some creepy bloke called Willy. I know I had the book as well.

Crispbutty · 22/05/2016 21:17

Oooh! and Lizzie Dripping. Loved that too. :)

Bohemond · 22/05/2016 21:17

Ludwig! Pink ball with long legs if I recall. Very weird.

HumphreyCobblers · 22/05/2016 21:24

I was absolutely petrified of that witch. It was the way she could just pop up wherever she wanted, there was no escape Sad

It kept me awake at night when I was little.

Having said that, my dc both ran screaming from the room at Mr Maker's shapes.

HerBigChance · 22/05/2016 21:26

Chortling was ace and bonkers!

As was Hartley Hare (was the programme called Pipkins?) That hare was indeed sinister, and looked flea-ridden.

I remember Ludwig too. Didn't it emerge from itself and start playing a vioin?

GuinefortGrey · 22/05/2016 21:27

Terrified of The Wheelies. Even reading the thread title made me feel really anxious! I used to have horrible, horrible nightmares about them as a child. Vivid, wake up screaming or sleepwalking type night terrors 😳

As an older child, does anyone remember Chocky (sp?)?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/05/2016 21:32

I met the Animal Krackers when I was a kid - creepy feckers...

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/05/2016 21:34

Hartley Hare was bizarre but fab 😁😁

Mr Benn was on an acid trip when he 'went to he costume shop' wasn't he?

CakeThat · 22/05/2016 21:37

Scared by and loved Chorlton and the Wheelies.
Most terrifying show was the one featuring 'noseybonk' cant remember what it was called.

BikeRunSki · 22/05/2016 21:38

Loved Chorlton and the Wheelies!!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/05/2016 21:39

Cake Jigsaw!

HerBigChance · 22/05/2016 21:39

I'd forgotten that the witch could just vanish through floors and pop up again at will.

BaldBaby1970 · 22/05/2016 21:40

Hartley Hare. Manky, sinister but brilliant. Wouldn't get air time these days.

Chorltonswheelies422 · 22/05/2016 21:44

Thank goodness- thought it was a thread about me!

VioletBam · 23/05/2016 01:04

Grey yes, Chocky was fantastic!

Cobblers my DC were frightened of those shapes too! Oldest is 11 but all I have to do to terrify here still is sing "I am...a shape!"

Children of the Stones was proper horrifying. Even worse than Chocky.

RestlessTraveller · 23/05/2016 07:29

Love, love love Chortlton and the Wheelies! And now the theme tune is stuck in my head. Yeah, thanks for that.

Crumblevision · 23/05/2016 07:34

Anyone remember Bod? "I think I'll have . . . . a banana milkshake.l". I loved Bod, Mr Benn, Camberwick Green, Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine. What about the Banana Splits, and Why Don't You?

verona · 23/05/2016 07:48

Yes to The Changes and Lizzie Dripping, although I loved them both. Catweazle and Monkey freaked me out

SpringHasNearlySprung · 23/05/2016 08:12

I remember Bod and Aunt Flo but I hated the frog band. Willo the Wisp terrified me as a child and Fingerbobs was odd too. I did love Painting with Nancy though.

peppansalt · 23/05/2016 11:43

Worzel Gummidge - that was proper traumatising Shock.

peppansalt · 23/05/2016 11:46

Used to waste hours of time doodling 'Evil Edna' Grin

lulucappuccino · 23/05/2016 11:48

DC were frightened of Dirtgirl.

ThisisMrsNicolaHicklin · 23/05/2016 12:01

Fennella scared me so much I used to vomit. I really hated that show, even now I have to turn it over.
There was a kind of a mime thing, possibly on something with Tony Hart, with a big white face mask with a long nose. Not quite in the Fennella league but pretty scary.
There was also an episode of Flintstones that was so scary it drove all the kids on our street outside. I remember being huddled together with my friends on the pavement discussing how freaky it was, something about a hole to the centre of the earth.

ThisisMrsNicolaHicklin · 23/05/2016 12:04

Oh God, Livia, that's him. Holy shit, who thought these things were fine for children's programming?
