Not to understand my DC's homework

It's about subordinate clauses. It states on the sheet that a clause must always have a verb in it.

It then gives the following example of two one clause sentences being joined to make a two clause sentence:

"The monster looked scary. He looked angry."

"The monster looked scary and angry."

I don't see how this is a two clause sentence, if a clause has to contain a verb.

There's also an exercise where you have to under line the main clause and the subordinate clause. One of the sentences is:

"Joan picked up the first prize and the best-groomed horse award."

Again, how is this two clauses?

Am I missing something?

I'm not sure it is a case of not checking the sheet for errors though.

If all of the questions are the same as the ones on the sheet and the aim is to teach subordinating conjunctions, then I'm not sure they've read the sheet at all. It's not really the best set of examples to do that.

Ego, I am with you and raise you a subjunctive tone! Having just survived teaching year 6 SPAG this year I can confirm that homework is utter pants.

Conjunctions are coordinating or subordinating. Clauses can be introduced with either type, or indeed adverbials, but a main clause must always stand alone whether the subordinate (or indeed, relative) clause is introduced with one or the other. Usually, the FANBOYS coordinating conjunctions make a compound or coordinate sentence although they can be used as subordinating at times. Relative clauses are also subordinate.

Clear? I have hated this year so much.
