... to think that JobSite should not advertise 'scam' jobs?

ilsen1973 · 20/05/2016 20:07

Jobsite is the UK Gov digital version of the the old Jobcentre...
I was a contract worker but I hurt my back outside of work. So, stuck at home, no 'sick-pay', bills/rent mounting up etc. Am claiming benefits but can't cope.
I can work online/phone. I want to work.
I have been looking for these type of jobs, but the 'serious' ones I am not qualified for. (eg. high-level accountancy/finance/IT etc)

My AIBU is; Is right that the Gov website advertises blatantly obvious MLM/'scam' "home-business" jobs?
Surely this is preying on already vunerable people?
Normally you get directed to some random website/Recruitment Company, have to input loads of info/personal details before you learn it is all a bit dodgy and they want some money upfront.

AIBU to think this is just 'not on'?

vickyyy yes anyone can advertise. I have a friend who has just done this and was shocked that nothing was checked out by the jobcentre/dwp.

Did you mean Jobsite or Universal Jobmatch? Although they're both utter shite. Pages and pages of nonexistent jobs, completely out of date adverts etc.

I agree.

I thought they were the same thing Blush whichever is the one linked to the jobcentre is the one I'm talking about.

Yes Vickky..personally I don't agree with it at all...seems very wild west...but they only deal with complaints...especially those who might affect 'public opinion'...the way things are done have changed so much...

OP look into proper firms that employ homeworkers. I've known people who have worked for ocado and a phone company, think it was BT.

www.themoneyshed.co.uk/ has been recommended on MN before and appears legit. (I have tried to join, but have had no reply so far.)

If there's a thread deserving of a Daily Mail 'journalist's' attention, it's this one.

But sadly they're just interested in greedy brides

There are lots of scams out there. Lots of people want the "work from home" lifestyle, but in reality there are very few employed positions working from home from the get go. Most people who are employed by a company and work from home started off in an office role and negotiated remote working after they'd been there a while.

There are lots of self-employed opportunities though, a good one is web search evaluation for Appen or Lionbridge, or freelance writing/admin through websites like Peopleperhour.

Work from home isn't all that though, it is very isolating and after a while you do miss the interaction with other people. I volunteer two mornings a week to get out of the house and see other people.

peopleperhour is just a race to the bottom isn't it?

It's a work from home company that pays per answer. People text a question and you answer IYSWIM. or just Google it if I'm not making sense.

True, but it's not an employed position. It's self-employed freelancing. Nothing wrong with that as it's what I do, but it is very different from an employed position where your employer does your tax, NI, gives you a pension, holiday pay, sick pay etc etc etc

There is a lot of rubbish on there but there is some good stuff too. I have been on there a few years and have some good customers who come to be regularly for work. I just scroll past the "write 10 x 500 word articles for $5" adverts.

Arise are another company who employ people to work from home in a virtual call centre. You can either set up your own business or work through one of their partners.

Who should we write to with respect to complain about job centres and the treatment of the unemployed? I want to make sure that I am writing to the correct people first!
