To put guests in the attic on a mat?

Usually they have DS' room and he moves in with us in a travel cot. There's a double-bed in his room and an en-suite. So it converts into a nice guestroom.

We also have an attic conversion (used as an office) no bed but space for a double camping-mat/air bed. Attic also has an ensuite but just a loo, sink and bath no shower.

WIBU to start giving guests the attic instead of turfing DS out of his room? I'm tired of moving all his things out to give guests drawers and cupboard space. Also 2 sets of guests have used his cot as a luggage rack
I don't want grubby bags and clothes dumped in his cot!!

They would be able to use his en-suite during the day, when he's not napping.

Yeah. I would.. Your guests can even bath. They don't need your sons room. At all.

I am sure there are local guesthouses if thats not good enough.

But you child having his own space is more important.

Get a double height, inflatable mattress so it even looks like a normal bed. DS need his space.

We'd have to dismantle the bed to move it into the attic, it's a big job. I prefer to keep bed in DS' room (I sleep there when he's teething or unwell).
And the attic has lots of boxes in there, we'd move them for guests but like to spread out when using it as an office. A bed would get in the way.

Let your poor boy keep his room.

Bty, why so many guests? That's the bit that would irritate me, especially as you don't seem very fond of them.

Air bed sounds fine. Camping mat makes me think of something a bit like a yoga mat with very little between bones and floor.

Blimey, don't know why you've persevered with rearranging DS's stuff for so long! Can you not put the double bed in the attic, or sell it and buy a sofa bed to go up there? If there's no spare bed in DS room you cannot be guilted into guests using it.

Yes air-bed seems a good option.

Guests are mainly family from overseas, also friends visiting for a few nights.

You'll have to do it eventually so you might as well invest in a decent folding/sofa/inflatable bed for the price now.

How about sofa bed for office, single in DS room? You could sleep there when necessary, and it's his bed when he outgrows the cot. Trundle bed under for maximum flexibility.

Definitely put them in the attic but I would consider getting a sofa bed or day bed (folds out to a double) as it sounds like it's not a one off! IKEA had a great day bed!

However if you have older relatives visiting them inflatable mattresses probably not an option and you'll need to be a bit more flexible - either revert to the old set up or give them your room and sleep with DS.

We have this double height air bed. Takes a couple of minutes to inflate (plugged into the wall so very easy) once it's all made up it looks just like a normal bed and is very comfy. Get one of those and let ds have his room, explain to guests that now he's older it's too disruptive to keep moving him about

Sure. But don't expect a lot of repeat visits if you're preserving a double bedroom for a baby and making your adult guests sleep on the attic floor.

Get some kind of guest bed for the attic as others have said, but of course YANBU - your attic is an ensuite guestroom/ office and your son's bedroom is his bedroom; he won't be a baby long, and kicking a child out of their room regularly is pants (I know, my room as a child was apparently my room/ guest room, guests even smoked in there, my creepy uncle moved my stuff around ... My parents had multiple downstairs rooms, one of which could easily have housed a sofa bed, but they didn't do that til after I grew up and moved out...)

Agreed with above, a day bed or sofa bed - anything with a real mattress - would be better for the attic, so it's suitable for everybody. You always end up with elderly parents visiting, a pregnant friend, someone with a bad back. People don't complain, but you wouldn't put them on the floor where they would struggle.

Personally I wouldn't. Why can't you and dh use the double the dd's room and give the guests your room? How long are they staying? If it's only a night or two there no need to turf things out to give them a drawer. I wouldn't expect a drawer and cupboard space when i stayed at friends, it's not a hotel.

That would be fine for me but my husband has back problems and wouldn't be able to sleep on the floor, it would cripple him! Not that we'll be staying at your house - but still. I'd get a bed up there, even if it's a faff - you'll only have to do it once.

Yanbu for any of the other suggestions above. People stay with you at your convenience, not theirs. If it's not workable for them, i'm sure there are hotels.

Do what you like. It's your house. As DS grows up, he might like the adventure of sleeping in the attic on an air bed if older relatives need a solid bed. We've given up our bed before now in this situation, but for parents/parents in law/friends close enough for us to say "here's a bed. Take us as you find us"
