FB Birthday etiquette

Less AIBU than trying to establish what the norm is, I suppose.

When Facebook tells me that it is [insert random aquaintance]'s birthday, then unless it is a close enough friend that I think "oh shit I didn't send a card", I tend to ignore it. Does this make me grumpy and antisocial?

FWIW, I haven't added my own birthday to my profile, and my profile is locked down quite tight, so I don't expect/need/want anyone to be wishing me a Happy Birthday either..

It's my birthday tomorrow. Well, actually, today as it's past midnight. If people wish me a happy birthday on fb I will enjoy seeing it. However it doesn't shape the enjoyment of my day.

The little present sat here beside me on the table waiting for tomorrow from dh and the kids is giving me a little smile as I am excited for that.

But the fb thing is fine whatever the outcome.

I did see a couple who had gone to stay with friends both post birthday wishes to a friend on FB when they were staying with the friend whose birthday it was and it made me Hmm and Wtf? So I get the superficial and somehow wrong feeling you describe. Especially when I see people I know who don't like other people posting a gushy happy birthday, bit hypocritical and purely for show.

But then I'm not FB biggest fan either. I've been put off friends due to their vague book habits. Threads like this encourage me to hit the delete button.

Ah, you've changed your mind slow typist

I only message people I consider friends rather than just acquaintances. I think it's fine. I only seem to receive birthday messages from friends too so I guess that's the norm.

If they're good enough to have accepted their friend request, then they're good enough to take the 2 seconds out of my day to wish them a happy birthday.
