AIBU?

To wonder why fish and chip shops don't usually deliver?

Kebab, Pizza, Indian and Chinese takeaways usually do. So why not fish and chip shops?

Or is this just my area?

Hmm

I only remember one ever that delivered I worked on a mental health rehab ward and we had a chippy tea every Friday and we probably spent close on £100, every week so they delivered Grin

We have a fish and chip van that goes around the local villages, he stops at regular stops and cooks fresh fish and chips. It just so happens he stops right outside my house in our village, bloody lovely fish and chips he makes too.

I don't think ours does but it would never occur to me as it's less than 5 mins in car. I do think it would go soggy. Big difference between 5 mins and however long it takes on a delivery route.

Fish and chips are only really good if you eat them straight away though.

I wish someone would set up a drive through chippy. That'd be ace.

This is slightly off topic but I live in the sticks and there's only three takeaways that deliver near us, and they're all pizza. I miss decent takeaway! I used to live in central London... Your post made me miss civilisation again. Yes please takeaway chippy tea delivered to my door!!!

Our local chippie delivers. Smile

People saying they would be soggy seem to be people who don't get them delivered. People who have had them delivered, are they soggy?

I think it's to do with cost.

One by us does but I've not tried it.

We used to live in a village when I was a kid which had a van that came round on a Friday. You used to get a bag of scraps for 5p.

Ours don't deliver but you can phone your order in. Only... You then have to queue to collect it. In the same queue as people waiting to order. So it saves precisely no time!

We have two good chippies within a 10 minute walk, but on a Friday tea time the wait is 45 mins to an hour. I'm looking forward to when the DC are old enough to wait in the queue!

"People who have had them delivered, are they soggy?"

Only if they're soggy anyway, depends how bad the chippy is really, if it's alright then they're not.

They don't do huge delivery rounds, well not here anyway, they drop off a couple then go back.

I think it might be more of an English thing the chippy not delivering. There's loads in Scotland.

I don't eat fish but scallops and chips occasionally. I wouldn't order from a place that delivers. Round here the ones that deliver aren't proper fish and chip shops, they're either curry/kebab type places that also do fish and chips and they're horrible. They'd go too soggy on the journey as well.

I grew up in Dublin, where most chippies deliver and was surprised that they didn't when I moved to the UK. But they're much more expensive in Dublin than here so it's probably a cost thing.

Quality-wise there's no difference between going and collecting or waiting for delivery

There's been a drive through chippy not too far from us for years.

I think it might be that fish and chips have been around for years, long before most other takeaways and people just walked to the local one. They just don't see the need to change - delivery costs a lot and with fish and chips, isn't great for the product if the driver has a few deliveries to make.

But fish and chips aren't that cheap any more - nearly a fiver a portion so about the same as Chinese or Pizza but still a bit cheaper than Indian or Thai. (I am aware that our takeaways in a large city in northern England are cheaper than a lot of places).

We have two locally that do deliver, we had a third but it closed down after a fire. There is a minimum spend of around £10 for each of them and they are as good as getting from store because they are less than 5 minute drive (different directions) and they deliver ours then go back to the shop because they only deliver very locally and we tend to order early anyway (very rare we have them though)

Unfortunately, my favourite doesn't deliver, probably a good thing though because we would probably double the times we have it (maybe up to 5/6 times a year) you can call and order though, save waiting if you are getting meals made, and then you don't have to queue either

In our house the only answer to that would be...
Do you deliver.
No, just do fish and chicken.

Thank-you and goodnight Grin
