yes it was a stupid mistake, but who can hold their hand up and say they have never ever made a mistake at work? doubtless the club will go after the little guy for £3,000,000, when they pay that to has-been wayne rooney in just a few weeks...

Yes - if he's insured for that amount. But even if he is, a claim like that will probably make his premium out of reach for future years.

Apparently it was clearly labelled as a training device and had a phone number on it. Didn't anyone check it out before calling in the bomb squad?

Ah yes, of course, because the correct procedure when finding a bomb is to pick it up and examine it for contact details (having first put on reading glasses). Why not give it a little shake and listen to it to check for ticking?

Of course not!

SallyGardens · 17/05/2016 21:43

From what I've read, the training device was hung on the back of the cubicle door and was only spotted when someone was actually sitting on the loo! Very easy to push the door back against the wall while cleaning the loo and not look behind it.

Abraid2 · 17/05/2016 21:45

I thought he owned up in a very dignified way, no buck-passing. That's unusual enough to be admirable.

TheChimpParadox · 17/05/2016 21:52

Sloppy and failure to attention to detail. This guy was an ex police search trained officer as such you need an eye for detail and procedure otherwise people's lives are at risk.

Yes lets phone the number on the suspect package ! Then you go BOOM !

Credit to him fessing up but his reputation in the security industry is possibly shot to pieces - he is a risk because he lacks attention.

GoringBit · 17/05/2016 22:32

Maybe slightly off-topic, but I thought this story about Moses from Sierra Leone was rather lovely.

MadisonAvenue · 17/05/2016 22:47

I'm finding it very difficult to have any sympathy for him.

I bought tickets to that match 11 months ago. I love the last match of the season as there's usually a great atmosphere and it was to be my son's first final game. Because of this man's incompetence (and that of the security staff at Old Trafford) we went to trouble and expense of making a 5 hour round trip for absolutely fuck all. We couldn't make it to tonight's rearranged fixture so we've been left very, very disappointed.

bridgetoc · 17/05/2016 23:01

A geniune mistake or complete incompetence? Perhaps both! Do I feel a little sorry for him? Maybe........ We all make mistakes don't we, I know I do! Here's the thing though We must be held accountable for our mistakes, and that company, and Man Utd must take responsibility for this huge cock up, and compensate The Bournemouth fans, and others who spent a fortune to get to the game. I think some fans flew in from Dallas Texas....

I bet the poor bastard finished his shite in double quick time after seeing that.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 18/05/2016 01:59

I also feel for the fans who wanted to watch the Man Utd vs Bournmouth match and have now had to do two trips up from the south coast to Manchester.

I bet the Bournemouth fans had a hell of a journey too.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/05/2016 06:34

I agree OP, I feel sorry for him.

AyeAmarok · 18/05/2016 06:56

I also agree and feel sorry for him. Simple mistake, God, we all make them. Nobody was injured or hurt, and it was an excellent opportunity to test the evacuation procedures.

I am very impressed how he came out and took the full rap for it straight away, wish more folk were like him.

It's a shame if he loses his business for this as, ironically, after this he'd probably be the least person/company to ever make a mistake again!

Why is he getting it in the neck though? Surely there are two bigger problems;

  1. that the squad training didn't find it. It was hardly hidden in an obscure and difficult to search location.

  2. why did no one at the stadium find it before they opened? Do they do security sweeps? Do they have cleaners? Why wasn't the bathroom thoroughly searched?

I'd say it's taught a lot of people a serious lesson and in a way they should be grateful it happened, someone working there should have easily found that bomb if they knew what they were doing. I doubt there will be any training teams or security staff in the country that don't check behind toilet doors now.....

Darrelrivers · 18/05/2016 07:19

Feel v sorry for this guy. Had a quick look at co accounts (I'm that sad) and it seems a small business so this will prob destroy it. V simple mistake which he has held his hands up to. On the plus side Man United had a great test of their security procedures

barbet · 18/05/2016 07:25

Yy MistressChalk.

There'll be other football matches ffs.

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 18/05/2016 07:49

I was reading about a fuck up by a surgical registrar at our local hospital - she basically got the location of the incision wrong for a C section and the baby died a couple of days later. Heartbreaking for the parents, but I was amazed by the comments about wanting the surgeon locked up, publicly tarred and feathered and thrown out of the profession. Do these people never think "there but for the grace of God" ? If I fuck up at work people lose money - that's it. What happened at Old Trafford could have been a lot worse and baying for this guy's blood won't change the outcome. His willingness to put his hands up and admit he fucked up impressed me - that takes more balls than most of us have.

Birdsgottafly · 18/05/2016 09:26

The only reason that the Suicide Bomber didn't get into the Football ground on the night of the Paris attacks, was because of good security.

We can't allow anyone who isn't capable and thorough to work in the Security of Venues, especially in the present climate.

Just because they're football fans, their safety shouldn't be compromised.

This is a topic that gets much discussion.

It was a strong possibility of being real. The Country's focus was on London and the Queens celebration, so other major Cities need to be on red alert.

I've worked in Care, was a CP, it's so frustrating to work with people who aren't thorough, in a Workplace were people, or Collegues suffer, because of that.

""What happened at Old Trafford could have been a lot worse and baying for this guy's blood won't change the outcome. ""

I think that's how 'cultures' develop and it's a reminder to others in similar roles that it's the end of their career if they don't do their job properly, before someone is injured or killed.

JuxtapositionRecords · 18/05/2016 09:33

But birds this guy and his company don't work there. They were there to do a training exercise three days earlier. That means for three days and before a big match this fake bomb went undetected right up up until the last minute.
The security team at Old Trafford are just as much to blame - they didn't even find it at all, it was some random person on the loo.
