I have put on an awful lot of weight since having the coil, Aibu to think I'll lose the weight if I have it removed?

Depo and the implant both made me bleed continuously and put on weight, yet the doctors said that neither was a side effect of either drug. Why do they deny it when empirical evidence so strongly suggests otherwise?

MissMoo22 · 17/05/2016 16:41

I had mine removed to see if it helped me lose the insane amount of weight I had put on. It didn't. And I fell pregnant within weeks of having it removed so ended up fatter than ever.

Amy214 · 17/05/2016 16:55

Kitty, i hardly ate aswell and my weight ballooned, i went to the doctors about a sore back and thwy said it was because i was too fat but refused to remove the implant, i had to go to a family planning clinic and luckily they had a cancellation so i had it removed the same day! They certainly arent telling us that we can gain weight, i think if they were more honest about the side effects less women would be happy to sign up to it!

Amy214 · 17/05/2016 16:57

Quim i bled constantly too whilst on the implant and as soon as i came off it the bleeding stopped and the weight dropped off, i feel much better and happier in myself since being on the pill (i understand its not the same for a lot of people but most people i have spoken to agree)

KittyKrap · 17/05/2016 17:00

It's crazy! I bled for two years and they'd tell that maybe the next jab (every 3 months) would stop it. It was only after two years that they got the scales out and told me it was 'routine' to weigh patients now.

Luckily I lost the weight from an 18 to a 10/12 but it took a kick start of exercise first, diet never changed.

Amy214 · 17/05/2016 18:12

I was told to give it a chance it'll stop eventually but theres only so much you can take before it gets really annoying Grin

Goingthedistance · 17/05/2016 18:17

The mood swings were unbearable plus sex drive went completely out of the window. On top of heightened anxiety and tearfulness. Poor DP got the brunt of a lot of temper too!

WeeHelena · 17/05/2016 18:21

I have had the mirena for 4 yrs and had no weight gain as was already over my natural weight iykwim I'm now as slim as I should get and that's my worry that when I get a new one in next year it will cause weight gain.

Fecking hormones and the price to pay not to have babies Sad.

Other than that over the 4yrs my symptoms have changed repeatedly not all great but not all bad iyswim , so there's a chance yours will if it's worth sticking it out for the contraception side.

WeeHelena · 17/05/2016 18:23

quim I exploded with weight gain with the depo jag but I didn't make the connection until yrs after I stopped.

MaisieDotes · 17/05/2016 18:27

nd the bloating was weird as it was puffy in my very lower stomach

I've heard it described as the "mirena pouch" mad

My GP is mad for me to get one but, having recently become nearly suicidal on cerazette, I'm going to give it a swerve. Copper coil is the only option left for me I think.

Weight gain isn't an issue on the copper coil is it?

KittyKrap · 17/05/2016 18:30

Maisie, if it reacts bad to your hormones then it reacts REALLY badly. I had my new one in for a few months and begged to see my GP. I literally walked in and she said 'I bet you want it out, I'm a nightmare with hormones myself!' Brilliant!

Ifiwasabadger · 17/05/2016 18:31

I have the copper coil and lots a kilo when I had it put in! It's brilliant.

Idliketobeabutterfly · 17/05/2016 18:32

Another depo gainer here. It was the start of my issues with weight and problems with fertility.

StrawberrytallCake · 17/05/2016 18:32

My mirena has made my post childbirth bump go down - however my womb was described as 'bulky' by my consultant 😕 So I think lack of bleeding and shedding of the lining has helped with this and my endo and adenomyosis.

Hysterectomy will happen in 10 years or so I think!

Zaurak · 17/05/2016 18:37

any hormonal contraception can affect you. Mirena has a pretty tiny dose but some people are more sensitive than others

It's true there's no proven link but don't forget that these studies are done on X thousand people. What they mean is that across the whole cohort there was no significant weight gain. That doesn't mean that some individuals didn't have minor issues

TurquoiseDress · 17/05/2016 19:00

OP- if you have the copper cool (IUD) it contains no hormones at all so it's very unlikely to have made you put on weight from a hormonal perspective.

Whereas the Mirena (IUS) contains hormone which acts locally on the uterus.

Sounds like you could have it taken out but what method of contraception would you use instead?

Have you tried to lose weight through diet/exercise? (Sorry if I missed this up thread)

TurquoiseDress · 17/05/2016 19:02

From what I can recall- the Depo injection is the only contraceptive method with a proven link to weight gain

User543212345 · 17/05/2016 19:14

I've had mine taken out this afternoon as I've gained weight, developed horrendous spots, have sensitive boobs the size of the world and bleed for 3 weeks out of every four. Horrible thing. I had one before and had no side effects at all - no periods, no weight gain, nothing. I can't fathom what was different this time. I've officially broken up with hormonal contraception - DH has been snipped so no need anymore.

KeithRichardsPetCat · 24/05/2016 17:08

That's my coil out Grin will update in a few weeks

Fourarmsv2 · 24/05/2016 17:19

I have a beautiful 16w bump thanks to the Mirena. Have gained 10lb since insertion which is all on my tummy and bum so trousers feel horrible.

However dreadful flooding periods are gone, replaced by light infrequent bleeding.

ShallNotBeNamed · 24/05/2016 17:25

Are you actually 16weeks pregnant? How long have you had your mirena coil for?

OP posts:
LanceCorporalJones · 24/05/2016 17:33

How long have you had your coil OP ?

ShallNotBeNamed · 24/05/2016 20:20

Just over a year now, I was trying to give it time, in fairness it has been so convenient in some aspects, it's just the weight & being a bit miserable, but that could just down to me being a new mum, I had it fitted when ds was 3months old

OP posts:
Fourarmsv2 · 24/05/2016 21:02

Sorry no, looks like a 16w bump!!

ShallNotBeNamed · 24/05/2016 21:11

I did panic then, that's all I need Wink
