Kids on scooters during school run 😒

It drives me insane. Small path to school and they come zooming so fast up behind you that if you don't move you get smacked at the back of your legs, and then none of them say please or thank you or excuse me. Drives me insane! 😒

Obviously I do get that areas are different worra see my most recent post about how it's not unusual to see adults on scooters where I am.

WorraLiberty · 18/05/2016 10:51

Fair enough Nicki

I just read your post as you hinting that people are making their scenarios up for MN.

SoupDragon · 18/05/2016 10:53

How is inconsiderate scooting OK if it's in a park but not on the school run? The answer is, of course, that it isn't which means the problem is the manners not the scooter. Scooting around a park at high speed is no better than scooting to school if your child is not paying attention to their surroundings and other people.

Pagwatch · 18/05/2016 10:54

Oh Worra Grin

Do you actually believe that people don't?

WorraLiberty · 18/05/2016 10:56

Of course not Pagwatch! Grin

But in this particular case, many people will have either been hit by a scooter, or know someone else who has.

NickiFury · 18/05/2016 10:57

Indeed Pag Grin

ilovesprouts · 18/05/2016 10:58

Them heelys are just as bad all over shopping centres.

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 18/05/2016 11:00

Hate it here. The road right outside the school is very narrow and inconsiderate parents block the path waiting for their kids rather than on the playground but thats another thread Wink

Its on a hill too so the kids speed down there. They, the kids, have little consideration for other pavement users and the parents do sweet FA to deal with the problem. None of them wear helmets either. Don't care if I'm being ott but a kid going really fast down a hill can still fall and smack their head as badly if not worse than on a bike.

I'm so fed up of having to walk in the road - its busy and crowded too because parents park on double yellows there - because a parent will no make their kids walk properly or even teach them to be considerate of other people. Let the scoot all over the place.

The parents that block the pavements standing there talking drive me potty too. Stand and talk in the playground not block the pavement! Its safer ffs!

I want to be able to walk down the road to the school without being ran into by small children or forced into the road because parents with pushchairs insist on walking side by side blocking the path.

There's a reason I use breakfast and afterschool clubs to avoid it all.

btw my DCs have a scooter. Its for play time not going to school on. Walking is exercise too.

NickiFury · 18/05/2016 11:01

I am going to buy dd some heelys for her next trainers. She really wants them. I suppose there will always be someone who finds your choices annoying.

PinguForPresident · 18/05/2016 11:01

I've been doing the school run with gaggles of children for years and have never been hit by one of these rogue scooters!

I find them incredibly useful for the school run. Reluctant walkers are much happier to go on foor if they have a scooter to ride.

My daughter has a micro sprite, which is big enough for me to use: it's brilliant. my kids are a t 2 different schools, so I can scoot to pick up my son, then with me on the scooter and him on the balance bike (he's 4) we go to collect daughter from school 9with a quick stop in the park) then she scoots home, he bikes and I trot along behind them.

Most kids seem to be driven to school round here. I'd be much happier to se more kids on scooters.

Micah · 18/05/2016 11:03

It's bikes for me.

They quietly speed up behind you, and the first you know about it is the DINGDINGDINGDINGDING of the bloody bell. Because you're in their way, on the pavement. I don't care if they're children, if they're cycling on the pavement they give way to pedestrians.

Makes me jump every time. I refuse now to squash over to let them past, they can wait.

WakeUpFast · 18/05/2016 11:05

Come to our school...we have a PARENT who scooters, she's more of a liability than the children.

Same here!

Scooters are just a fad that will die out in a few years. I don't remember anyone scooting 10/15 years ago.

NickiFury · 18/05/2016 11:12

I had a scooter as a child. A big red clunky thing. Not like the whizzy brightly coloured ones of today.

starry0ne · 18/05/2016 11:14

I had a sccoter 30 years ago so not such a fad, my cousin same age had a skateboard. We all had bikes.

RhodaBull · 18/05/2016 11:17

My annoyance are the kids that come up behind us, ask us to move out of their way, but then get to a road they need to cross so they wait for their mum. We overtake and then of course it all happens again and again

This. It used to drive me insane . Once a kid rammed me in the back of the legs. The child jumped off but the scooter went flying. The mother came running up and asked if the scooter had been damaged Angry

DancingHippo · 18/05/2016 11:27

We have this with pre-schoolers in front of the school gates. We drop at the gate so the approx. 20ft by 20ft area in front of the school is choc a block before school (500+ kids). The preschool kids go in after the school kids and the little darlings are zooming in and out all over the place while the parents stand gossiping.

The number of times DS and I have had to jump out of the way to avoid a collision is ridiculous.

I can well imagine that if a small DC was hurt, the bigger DC (or parent) would cop the flack for it from the parents. Bloody fools!

Yes they've been around for many years. Not the lightweight high speed ones though . I DO think it looks a bit odd to see an adult on one , especially if wearing a lycra close fitting onesie like an alien Grin

But hey it's better than cars!

specialsubject · 18/05/2016 11:30

Do you all live in places with no off street parking and no cars reversing out?

I had a kid almost crash into the side of my car when I was taking it out of the drive. The parent was 100 yards away. Fortunately I was driving out forwards so I saw him and stopped the car. If I had been reversing I would not have seen him and could have driven straight over him.

That's one of the reasons I drive out forward; but not everyone does.

teach them to walk, or to scoot at walking pace; not very interesting, eh? Scooters are for uncrowded parks not pavements. The only wheels on pavements should be pushchairs and wheelchairs.

bonus - you don't have to carry the scooter about.

Pagwatch · 18/05/2016 11:32

Needascarf

You can move in with me Grin
I live directly opposite a school in the middle of town and have three schools within 10 minutes walk. I have 3 children one of whom I walked to school everyday for 8 years. Been here 10 years. Never seen it. Never heard about it

Are you alright on the sofa? [smuggy smuggerson]

I've been run into by a child on heelies though. Those things can fuck off.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 18/05/2016 11:36

I dream of collecting all the blasted bastard scooters and burning them on a big pyre.

manicmij · 18/05/2016 11:45

Sure if child can scooter to school they can also walk, run, skip the same route. No need for car at all. Or is it that the children just WANT to scooter so their demand is accommodated!

paxillin · 18/05/2016 11:51

They are kids on a scooter, ffs. It might be annoying, but I don't think they loom large in the accident stats. It's ecological, free, they get exercise and have fun. Rude kids exist with and without scooters. I think we should ban trainers, a kid bumped into me once running whilst wearing them and several almost did over the years Grin.

manicmij · 18/05/2016 11:51

I sometimes have to escort gs to school and he uses scooter. I can't recall how many times I have told him off for darting between people or squeezing alongside. There is no way a person can hear a child shout "excuse me" with all the traffic noise and as already stated, the adults chatting non stop en route. Hearing impaired are also at risk. If children are to scooter then they should be taught 1. to slow down on footpaths 2. courtesy and 3. that the world does not revolve around them wanting to use a scooter.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/05/2016 11:54

"I am going to buy dd some heelys for her next trainers. She really wants them. I suppose there will always be someone who finds your choices annoying"

Well, Nicki - this would only annoy me if you were going to let your child use the heelys in inappropriate situations - a very crowded supermarket, for example, or if you were going to let her skate into people and not apologise - and I assume you will be instilling safe use of the heelys and good manners whilst using them - which is fine, IMO.
