With all the PTA money?

She's been treasurer for years, no children at the school anymore.

She usually attends roughly 1 of every 4 meetings. She hasn't been to one for 6 months. She won't answer the phone or the door, doesn't reply to emails or texts. Chair went to her house and she didn't answer the door although it looked like she was in. We have no access to the money or accounts and the school is lending us money to get back off her at some indeterminate time in the future.

We have the school fate soon and she has all the info on stalls etc not to mention the money we need to buy things! She owes one of the parents about £50 for things they bought from their company for the PTA xmas fate.

Nobody else seems concerned! I really got angry about it at the last meeting and said this is ridiculous, we have no idea how much is in the account, we can't get hold of her, we have no working float. Apparently she has family drama at the moment and thats why she's unavailable but she still wants to be treasurer. I raised the possibility that there could be something dodgy going on and got shut down by the chair who said its not possible as there are two signatories on the account (because she couldn't just forge a signature???)

AIBU to think they should be taking this a bit more seriously given there is over £7000 (at the last count) of money that has been donated by the parents fgs, not to just sit in an account that nobody can get into?!

I'm late to this but gosh, it sounds a bit fishy even though the treasurer has now been in contact.

Why cancel the meeting and not let people know?

Maybe it's not dodgy as such but an awkward/private/sensitive issue in the treasurer's personal life, but it is resulting in chaos whatever it is.

What are you doing next, OP?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/05/2016 14:38

Sorry, that was a cross post ...

Well done on your decision; I suspect you know perfectly well that you've done the right thing Flowers

LookJustCancelTheCheque · 23/05/2016 14:40

Ah, I x-posted too!

OVienna · 23/05/2016 14:57

Yup OP at this point I'd bail. Far too much aggro.

PTAmissing · 23/05/2016 15:02

And it's done Smile resigned!

It will be nice to be able to take the DC around the fair myself this year!

OP posts:
chewingawasp · 23/05/2016 15:06

Well done - leave them to it. They sound a total shambles.

Bolograph · 23/05/2016 15:17

Jut turned up for PTA meeting to be told it's cancelled.

Resign, and encourage the others to do so as well. It's not going to end well, and you don't have to be overly cynical to suggest the chair hasn't cancelled the meeting just on a whim.

LagunaBubbles · 23/05/2016 15:17

Good stuff OP. Still think there is something dodgy going on somewhere, best of out of it!

cozietoesie · 23/05/2016 15:22

Copy your email to the HT?

cozietoesie · 23/05/2016 15:27

You don't necessarily have to be 'very good' MrsH - at least not in the sense of eg having to be an accountant to be a Treasurer. Just halfway diligent and halfway organised.

These may be reasonable sums of money in question (and they represent a lot of time and effort on the part of parents) but they're not the accounts of a multi-national.

GoudyStout · 23/05/2016 15:38

^^ Yes to that - diligent records of income and expenditure, reconciled to the bank account every month, and audited by an independent qualified person annually. I've managed a youth organisation's account with a turnover of £50k per year on an Excel spreadsheet.

PausingFlatly · 23/05/2016 15:45

Just caught the various updates and am Shock.

Glad to see you've made your exit, OP, as there's nothing even slightly reassuring in the supposed "contact" made with the Treasurer.

You've had a text message, that the chair has had a phone call with the Treasurer.

She hasn't seen her in person, so hasn't kept her promise to go round there.
She hasn't seen bank statements.

She has simply been told (supposedly) by Treasurer that all is fine.

And that the Treasurer will supposedly turn up in 5 weeks' time carrying a small bag of money for the fete float. Nothing to prove where that money will come from (could be loan shark to cover fete day). Nothing to prove this will even happen. No mention of how to pay the parent who is owed money.

And the chair is claiming this is adequate investigation. And has herself run away from attending the PTA meeting.

I'm sorry, but it really doesn't look good.

PausingFlatly · 23/05/2016 15:47

In fact if the Treasurer were lounging on a beach in Barbadoes, or buried under the patio by the Chair, you'd be none the wiser.

cozietoesie · 23/05/2016 15:55

Oh - and put a 'read receipt' on the copy email to the HT if you can. If not, seek confirmation that it's actually been received eg from the School Secretary.

Stuffofawesome · 23/05/2016 16:20

Gosh what a farce. I would also copy to chair of governors. I think they would be interested in anything with the potential to harm reputation of the school and the HT is accountable to them.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/05/2016 16:26

It will be nice to be able to take the DC around the fair myself this year!

Absolutely, yes Smile

Though I'd be on alert for the quiet requests of "could you just ...?"

Tiggeryoubastard · 23/05/2016 16:40

Please give your reasons in your resignation and copy your email/letter to the governors and LEA.

Baconyum · 23/05/2016 17:11

I think it's time to let as many authorities that can pull the head/chair up as possible. Absolutely ridiculous and sounding REALLY dodgy now, governors, lea, action fraud, police whatever's necessary this cannot continue

Hissy · 23/05/2016 17:18

I agree with Bogey

MrsHathaway · 23/05/2016 17:28

Though I'd be on alert for the quiet requests of "could you just ...?"

And "oh, aren't you helping this year?"

MrsHathaway · 23/05/2016 17:29

You don't necessarily have to be 'very good' MrsH - at least not in the sense of eg having to be an accountant to be a Treasurer. Just halfway diligent and halfway organised.

Well yes I am that. And unlike my predecessor comfortable with spreadsheets.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 23/05/2016 17:45

Have you reported this to Police yet. If you've been on the committee 6 years you to take to take official action as this is beyond dodgy.

Pollaidh · 23/05/2016 18:01

This cancelled meeting rings (even more) alarm bells. You and the others that didn't get the message could potentially be the only honest people left.

Glad to see you've resigned. Hope you put reasons for resigning into letter and copied it to Governors, HT etc. Personally I would also contact that Action Fraud hotline or the local police.

KittyKrap · 23/05/2016 18:10

Oooh I reckon she's done a runner! Expect a suntan or a new nose.
