Magistrates had ruled that Jon Platt had no case to answer as, overall, his daughter had attended school regularly."

He got so much abuse over this but kept fighting it.

Had to chortle to myself this morning when BBC breakfast tried to catch him out by asking how his daughter was doing academically, to which he replied that she was in the top 2-3% at KS3. The government need to get over this false belief that parents who do this are endangering their child's education. There are plenty of engaged, supportive parents who take their children out of school for a bit of time yet remain fully committed to education. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Good on him! So long as children are attending school regularly there's no harm (especially at the age of 6) to miss a week or two of school. Learning and teaching doesn't have to take place in a class room!

Ds learns to speak French and practises it every year we go there. He learns geography on holiday - we stood on a northern France beach and explained that you could see England from where we were stood. He learned history from the WW2 bunkers and about the D day landings. He learned about the sea and where food comes from when we collected mussels, washed and cooked them for dinner. He learned to swim. None of this was accomplished at school, or indeed home.

No. They will learn so much more at Disneyland. Obviously.

Given that his daughter is doing fine academically and her attendance is otherwise good I doubt he's too concerned about a week off, even if it isn't an 'educational' holiday.
