I grew up in the 1970s, the age of relaxed and free range parenting. If mumsnet had existed then, what do you think mums would have asked in AIBU?

AIBU to be worried about the dangers of children accessing hedgerows? Everyone knows people only really use them to hide porn mags?

AIBU to feed my kids crumpets cooked on the gas fire during the power cuts?

AIBU to force my child to walk to school over a carpet of ladybirds? (true story!)
she says they are crunchy and make her feel sick

Rosebud05 · 14/05/2016 21:10

AIBU to think there should be more Fire Men on duty during power cuts?

Naked flames and nylon nighties are not a good combination. My dd nearly went up in flames when I dropped my cigarette on her.

Cute ghosty,I, m a little younger then you I was born in 73 bur I, m sure I had a similar dress Grinwas there a fashion for all girls to have long party frocks that they all wore to childrens parties ?

ghostyslovesheep · 14/05/2016 21:21

That was a bridesmaids dress from my Aunt and Uncles Wedding in 1972 (much reused as a party frock) it was made from corduroy!

I think the fashion came from recycling bridesmaids frocks - I had 2 - the other was purple crimpolene with a white lace smock!

x2boys · 14/05/2016 21:31

I wasent a bridesmaid untill I was i was my sisters bridesmaid when I was about 27 but I, m sure I had a long frock I think it had purple velvet on it Hmm I do remember children's parties being more formal in those days and jelly always seemed to be in the shape of a rabbit ?

ghostyslovesheep · 14/05/2016 21:39

ha yes rabbit jelly - I remember it well!

x2boys · 14/05/2016 21:41

Do you remember jelly mixed with condensed milk and it made some kind of blackmange thing ?

TroysMammy · 14/05/2016 21:48

x2boys I whizz up liquid jelly and evaporated milk and leave to set. If you get it right it tastes of clouds Grin

x2boys · 14/05/2016 21:50

Is it pink TroysMammy I always remember it being pinkGrin

Baconyum · 14/05/2016 21:51

I remember that it was a 'thing' you either wore a long dress or long skirt (and smock top) to parties. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I remember the boys wearing suits and bowties but waistcoat and no jacket.

We must have roasted at parties summer '76 Grin

x2boys · 14/05/2016 21:51

And possibly it wasent condensed milk it might have been carnation milk ?

TroysMammy · 14/05/2016 21:53

Yes, always pink. I've got strawberry jelly, a tin of evap and an electric mixer so tomorrow it's clouds for dessert. May push the boat out and sprinkle on 100's & 1000's. Smile

x2boys · 14/05/2016 21:53

Yy Baconyum we must have gone to the same parties Grin

x2boys · 14/05/2016 21:54

Ooh 100s and 1000,s haven't thought about them in in a long time Smile

Catmuffin · 14/05/2016 22:02

When I went to birthday parties in the Infants in the mid 70s we wore long dresses down to the floor that our mums had made. I remember my mum buying fabric that was black with little pink roses all over it and making it into a long dress. We played Oranges and Lemons, Sleeping Lions and "dancing" for Musical Statues consisted of jumping up and down on the spot.

x2boys · 14/05/2016 22:03

My mum always used to serve golden syrup sponge on a Sunday afternoon which we ate listening to " sing something simple " she used to boil it for hours in a tin Confused and serve it with carnation milk it was lovely .

Ma weans are aye greetin' n moanin'. Am a bein' unreasonable if a says tae them:
"Stoap yer bubblin', or ah'll gie yeh somethin' tae bubble aboot?"

And am a bein' unreasonable if a send them tae the shoap fir ma fags?

Baconyum · 14/05/2016 22:36

Aaah hundreds and thousands, gold n silver balls, butterfly buns, cheese n pineapple hedgehogs, sausages on sticks, trifle....

Proper kids parties then!

Yyy to the games too! Wink murder, musical chairs/statues/bumps...

Baconyum · 14/05/2016 22:37

And my dress was green purple and orange! With broderie anglaise trim

Northernlurker · 14/05/2016 22:49

Money Matters

Dh and I are very well prepared - we pay our life insurance weekly to the man from the pru who comes to the door. I mean how else would we make regular payments?

We also do the household accounts every Friday night with a red book and a lot of angst.

MeMySonAndl · 14/05/2016 23:32

AIBU to thing my DIL is denying my grandson the best start in life by insisting on breastfeeding? Formula has been carefully engineered to provide the best nutrition a baby can have.
