Vampire and werewolves -inappropriate for a 7yr old

My Ds(7) school has a public library that they use when closed. He took out a book this week called vampires and werewolves which seems inappropriate material. It's full of pictures like the one attached, stories of people being burnt, how babies deaths were attributed to vampires drinking their blood as they slept.
I am pretty cross, it's really not the sort of thing I would let him read.
Thoughts?

Children's fairy tales stories can be pretty scary anyway. This is nice because it's rationally explained.
I think you are BU.

TheWindInThePillows · 11/05/2016 08:14

Don't watch 'Horrible Histories' then, it's extremely gory and focuses on all the worst things and times in history. Lots of heads chopped off, horrible diseases, foul punishments.

I agree with you that not all children find this fascinating or should watch it, it's not compulsory at all, but it is a pretty well recognized genre in children's history and factual entertainment, so if it's not for you and your child, you may have to actively avoid it (and they do World War 2 in Year 4 or something like that).

This inappropriate material is everywhere. I saw a horror-themed TV show recently that I deemed totally unsuitable for under 10s. It contained all manner of occult beings including vampires, werewolves, ghosts, spectres and mummies.

Like this book, it tried to explain these phenomena away scientifically, by revealing them to be "Old man Peters, the creepy fairground owner" all dressed up. There was also a talking dog (witchcraft?) and some coded drug references.

Thoughts?

Scooby Do. Scary as feck. I agree.Unsuitable for children under 21.

I think you should let your DS choose his own reading material and just be grateful that he wants to read and learn.

Sorry but what is the title of the book? Ds would love it! I think books like that are hit or miss. Some kids will enjoy them with no issue some will find them too much. If you think it's too much for him then you've done the right thing.

Clandestino · 11/05/2016 09:10

Sorry but what is the title of the book?

I want I want I want it too! DD loves the macabre (like all kids; she wanted to be a zombie wife for Halloween) and if you can combine it with a scientific explanation it's a sure winner!

HermioneJeanGranger · 11/05/2016 09:13

YABU.

I loved that kind of thing at his age. I read all the Horrible History/Gruesome Geography books. I think most kids love gruesome things - if he's upset by it, that's different, and by all means take it off him until he's a bit older, but I don't think the subject matter is inappropriate so long as it's child-friendly language etc.

grumpalumpgrumped · 11/05/2016 09:26

Here is the link to the book for those who wanted it.

Have no issue with horrible histories etc, it's just the way this is worded in places.
Still he is returning it today (library day) and I have told him I don't think it was suitable

I can see the appeal of this type of book to kids that age. It is just the sort of thing ds2 would choose, and then have nightmares about. I don't understand why people assume that TV has to be carefully monitored but books are ok whatever the content. I think we are all so keen to get boys reading in particular that we want to try to hook them in any way possible, and I do get that, but you know your son best and I don't think YABU.

My favourite book when I was around 7 was called Snakes and Snakebites which had great pictures of snakes and had in one section graphic pictures of necrotised snake bites and all sorts of horrors that would definitely happen to you if you were bitten. Loved that book, I still have it. Here is the updated version if you would like to get it for your son :)

cait fortunately he is an avid reader and reads everything he sees (museum visits take a long time, as can a walk down the highstreet as he reads evert sign, notice). But I do know that getting boys interested to read can be an issue, maybe that's the thinking behind it being available.

I monitor his TV carefully as he is easily influenced and I can see how much the things he sees changes his play and interactions

I think I fell in love with that author. Just looked at her other books. My wallet is weeping already.

But that's completely normal. We watched Star Trek and Star Wars with DD aged 6. She wants to be a Vulcan now and when she's 18, she'll have a plastic surgery to get pointy ears. And wants to be called Mrs. Spock. She was Princess Leia or Captain Phasma (depends on whether she feels like being good or bad) before but apparently, Star Trek is much cooler.
I just ordered the book for her, thank you for the tip!
