In the right hands but alas not mine the strikethrough function can be witty. However, many posters including me use it when it just isn't necessary.

often it renders their message senseless

AIBU and would anyone like to offer examples of how to use it to good effect

faded sorry that really made me Grin

*than you = thank you. When are we going to get a fricking edit button on this site!

I don't mind it unless people use it to make passive aggressive digs. It's as if they think that no one will call them out on it because what they said doesn't count because it was crossed out. They've still made the dig though.

Eeeek686 · 09/05/2016 14:16

I've always thought it was used in a "Oops did I accidentally actually say that out loud Grin ?" context, whereas quite a few numbskullsposters use it when brackets would be more appropriate? IMHO, obvs!

Notso · 09/05/2016 14:29

What LetThereBeCupcakes said.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 09/05/2016 14:31

In the right hands it's a precision tool and akin to Michelangelo carving David.

Sometimes it's wielded like a deranged ape with a power tool.

limitedperiodonly · 09/05/2016 14:36

I struck out the word mugs (as in idiots, not cups) and put in women. I was told to 'own' my comments

That was me OP. It annoys me.

Onemagnum - love it!!!!!

PeaceLoveGonk · 09/05/2016 14:59

limitedperiod - I know it was you. Strikethrough abuse annoys me too.

OneMagnum 😄 Spot on!

I can't remember last time I saw a witty strike through. Limitedperiod - could you oblige?

OP posts:
TheUnsullied · 09/05/2016 15:06

I use it to show the mildly amusing comparison between what I want to say and what it's socially acceptable to say, with the sentence being corrected to show the latter. For example:

This morning, DD was being a right twat willful.

Floisme · 09/05/2016 15:07

So why not just call her a right twat?

TheUnsullied · 09/05/2016 15:16

I do. It's still there. The strike through doesn't render it invisible.

DonkeyOaty · 09/05/2016 15:18

Oooh fight fight handbags

Sadly I can't. I know one when I see one though and am filled with joy and envy.

Floisme · 09/05/2016 15:20

The strike through doesn't render it invisible.
Exactly. So why bother with it?

TheUnsullied · 09/05/2016 15:21

I believe I explained that in my previous comments Hmm

Floisme · 09/05/2016 15:26

Fair enough.
Guess I just never find it funny.

banivani · 09/05/2016 16:02

You are definitely definitely not being unreasonable. I've been itching to start this very thread myself. Grin

TheUnsullied har a perfect example of a good strike-through up above. It's obviously used in that way! You write what you're really thinking, cross it out, and then the polite version. As if you're drafting a letter. With pen and paper. Like in the olden days.

All other opinions are wrong. But I reserve the right to be a hypocrite and change my mind if someone uses it some other way that is funny. Halo

Clandestino · 09/05/2016 16:06

I'm sure you're right. Not

member · 09/05/2016 16:12

Can you imagine if a poster called their dc a right twat with nothing to indicate it was said in a lighthearted way? Shock . It'd be "that's a child you're referring to"/"you're going to ruin that child's self-esteem with comments like that".

The strikethrough shows what the is really thinking but also the self-awareness that bluntly stating it will be leaped on by the professionally offended.

PeaceLoveGonk · 09/05/2016 16:23

Ooooh I haven't seen anyone use professionally offended, aka po, since LaQueen left us!

I like drinking a lot of little gin. GOOD I like drinking a little lot of gin. BAD

Couldn't agree more. The "mistake" has to come first.

Kanga59 · 09/05/2016 16:37

Can someone enlighten me how to use this fucking function so that I can abuse it as appropriate. thank you please
