to give up on running?

So I started running last week, I did a bit of walking and then run, I probably did it for around 10 minutes.

For the next 4 days I've had horrible pain in my legs and around my waist.

AIBU to give up on running? :(

bikerunski I'm using the free fitness22 10k app. I did the NHS Couch to 5K, and then just started about half way through the 10k app (where it does a 30 minute run)

00100001 · 09/05/2016 10:45

I liked the NHS one (I downloaded the podcasts so wifi wasn't an issue) - she seemed to know when I was struggling and said helpful things at just the right time Grin

BikeRunSki · 09/05/2016 10:54

Thanks 001. I've run 10ks and half marathons in the past, but my training was more ad hoc. I like that the NHS C25K tells me what to do!

00100001 · 09/05/2016 11:10

Yeah, it's much better to have a plan I feel :)

Plus I tell everyone about it, so there's a kind of 'peer pressure' for me to gout and run Grin

BikeRunSki · 09/05/2016 13:56

Impressed you're running with gout 001+• Wink

00100001 · 09/05/2016 14:20

Well, these things shouldn't stop us!! Grin

Well not being one to arse around I was knocking on the door of the nearest shoe shop with the 3 preschoolers today.

He did the gait analysis and as suspected I over pronate. I am wearing the trainers to break them in and both knees feel different already, one quite a bit.

I might get fixed!!!!

00100001 · 09/05/2016 14:39

hoorah!

BikeRunSki · 09/05/2016 14:50

Woo hoo, go poocatcher, poocatcher ....

Kflori · 09/05/2016 14:52

Stick with it!!!
I've not lng started again myself after a too long absence - not graduated to running outside yet, it's mainly been the treadmill for me. Running outside is much nicer, but unless I have a running partner, it's a no go for me - no will power, and too easy to just stop... So I've stuck to the gym for now, where I'm too embarrassed to go too slow/stop too son :-/
I can feel myself slowly (very slowly) getting back to fitness, and it's a great feeling. You'll get there!!!!

slinkysaluki · 09/05/2016 15:04

Knee pain and shin splints can be to do with badly fitting trainers, get your gait analysed at a sports shop. It can also be a sign of doing too much too soon so take it easy and gently don't increase your mileage to soon. I wear compression socks that co e up to the knees for extra support or you can use sports tape.

slinkysaluki · 09/05/2016 15:05

Stretching is really important but not with cold muscles you need to warm up first then stretch it you run the risk of injury.

Clandestino · 09/05/2016 15:08

I'm a long time runner but have been plagues by back pain for a long time. I went to a physiotherapist and was shown my posture which was all wrong, I was arching my lower back and rotating the upper one too much. Sorted and I see the difference now. Get your posture checked and you will save yourself years of pain and bad habits.

littledrummergirl · 09/05/2016 23:17

2nd run today. I managed this one as well. Thank goodness it's rest day tomorrow though. Grin

MargotLovedTom · 09/05/2016 23:24

I developed plantar fasciitis when I tried to do C25K 😔.

00100001 · 10/05/2016 07:07

Well fine drummergirl

littledrummergirl · 10/05/2016 07:20

Thank you 0010000. How are you getting on getlostdailyfail?

Runningupthathill82 · 10/05/2016 07:22

Margot - did it resolve itself ok?

Around 10 per cent of runners get plantar fasciitis at some point. It's very common and certainly isn't a reason to stop running altogether. Often a change of shoes and losing any extra weight makes a huge difference (as with many running niggles!)

Runningupthathill82 · 10/05/2016 07:32

(I'm not trying to be an arse with the weight comment, by the way. It often really does help with running injuries, as if you're not carrying additional weight your form tends to be much better. I purposefully lost a stone for this very reason, going from a size 12 to an 8/10, and it made a huge difference to my recurring ITB and knee issues).

getlostdailyfail · 10/05/2016 19:15

Thank you everyone for your support! Smile

I started the couch to 5K app today. I only managed to do half of it (15 min) but I still think that's OK to start with? Is it ok?

I've also now got bouts of sneezing and coughs Confused

With the couch to 5K app, can you run music a podcast on in the background?

The absolute hardest bit, IMO, is going from zero to running for 10 minutes for the first time
Once you can run for 10 minutes it's not much harder to keep it going for 30 and get round a parkrun
And once you can run 5k, training for a 10k or half marathon isn't difficult ......

But none of it - at all - is as hard as going from someone who sits on the sofa to someone who can run a mile.

This^

A thousand times. I have gone from being a couch potato to being very fit several times over the years ( health problems and stuff stopped me getting out) and I have run a half marathon fairly recently. Theabsolute hardest bit is the training up to that first mile. 2 miles to 13 was a comparative doddle.
I am looking longingly at local marathons and trying to decide if I have the time to train...

OooLookShoes · 10/05/2016 19:52

15 mins is FINE. actually it's not fine, it's GREAT. It's 15 minutes more than you did last week .

You are lapping everyone still sitting on the sofa eating crisps
