firstly hope its ok to post in aibu, I did post in health but didn't really get many replies so posting here for traffic. i have terrible anxiety and i am so scared

i was first diagnosed with them 11 years ago. I had a scan and biopsy and was told they were benign.

but then 2 years ago (after my youngest dc) was born I noticed my thyroid was slightly swollen again. so had a scan and a biopsy (because I have such bad anxiety particularly with health) for which I paid privately so I could have the results quicker. to my relief I was told yeah i still had nodules but they were benign. and also had blood tests which showed normal thyroid function. as it was private I didn't get any follow up appointments at all and wasn't advised to go back to own gp for follow ups or anything.

but I noticed that it is still swollen so i have been to my own gp and been referred to endocrinology. still waiting for my appointment! and my anxiety is really bad.....i made myself ill through it last time. basically i am scared of the C word. even though my GP said its unlikely that benign nodules develop into anything nasty and also my thyroid gland is quite even (which is apparently a good sign) my anxiety is just making me think all sorts.

i also had a blood test which came back normal. i am also quite self conscious as from some angles i think my neck looks slightly swollen and - assuming the nodules are still not anything worrying - i am not sure if they will do anything to get rid of them. but then on the other hand i have female relatives that have had the same and 2 of them have had part of their thyroid removed. i think it runs in the family. but seeing as my thyroid function is normal not sure if they would remove, or if there is any medication i can take to shrink them?! i don't want to google!

anyway i guess just hoping for some positive stories ideally! :(

It never affected my weight tbh, I have put on weight recently, but that is because I'm 50 and eat rubbish. My op was over 20 years ago, but my weight was fine up until recently.
Ask your GP for some counselling, it really helps anxiety and might help you.
Just remember, you already been told it's benign, so hold that thought. Plus if the doctor's were really concerned, you would have been given an appointment straight away to be seen

slutbucket

I think i probably do need to try Cbt. I worry that if something worse than this happened to me (health wise) that I would just completely go to pieces... if I'm thinking the worst with this what would I be like if for example I had a breast lump or something ? That would be far more concerning

I am glad the Cbt worked for you and hope you're ok now health wise too. Flowers

That's good to hear re the weight gain as tbh that was something that was worrying me if I do have to have it removed and go on thyroxine.

Also yeah I know you're right if the doctor was worried I'd have got referred immediately.

Thanks to everyone who has posted X
