Overweight Toddler

My almost 3 year old is overweight according to the children's bmi thingy. He has always been solidly built and has followed the 90th percentile since birth.
My own upbringing was slightly chaotic/ neglectful. Not an excuse but does mean I feel out of my depth sometimes when it comes to feeding my son/ activities. I want to revise his excercise and diet so he learns healthy habits young.
Does this sound okay? This morning he had half a bowl of porridge for breakfast and a kiwi. He had 2 custard creams with his cup of "tea" (warm milk) as a snack. Luch will be pasta and pesto (which has sweetcorn, spinach and tomatoes in it- though those will be picked out). Dinner will be either a veg korma and rice or butternut squash soup and one slice of bread. Pudding will be fruit or a yoghurt.
We have already been to the park for an hour this morning and will play in the garden later. I don't have a car that I can use during the day so we already walk everywhere. Is there anything else I can do? His diet and excercise seems okay to me but as I was brought up on ketchup or sugar cube sandwiches most days I'm aware my opinion may be skewed.

I think it's probably best to have no treats most days - maybe two days a week enjoy a treat. Sometimes this is easier said than done though when children have birthday parties on one day and grandparents giving them treats on another day etc etcetera - it quickly adds up.

I'd skip the custard creams. Some yogurts can be suprisingly unhealthy - the one DS used to eat had 4 spoons of sugar in each small carton - it was marketed as a healthy, organic yogurt so I kind of automatically assumed it must be good.

Oh there are some excellent TV shows on the health/otherwise of food eg food unwrapped, some of the Ted talks, I'll try to think of others

I think his diet sounds good, although I'd cut out the two biscuits. That's quite a lot for a toddler every day. Other than that, he sounds active and eats well.

His pasta sounds delicious and I am now craving pesto pasta!

I wouldn't switch his milk - he isn't having that much and it won't make a huge difference. Plus when he gets sick and all he takes is milk, you'll be glad it is full fat.

My DS (3) is also on 90 percentile. We're now into day 5 of him not eating due to a virus and I am very pleased for the extra padding!

My son is almost 3.5 and he is solid, but he's always been like that. He is very active and likes his food. According to the bmi thingy on the nhs website he is overweight, that just means he's over the 80th (I think) centile, but he's always been on the 90/95th. He's not fat, just solid! Which is the same as a few members of the family. You sound like you're doing a grand job! I honestly wouldn't worry about a couple of biscuits or giving beans on toast!

My top tip would be to buy some of the bowls/plates for kids at IKEA. Three kids down the line I have found them to be the perfect portion size up to age 5/6 ish. They are the orange/blue and lime green ones. They can also be microwaved so really handy too.

You sound like your doing fab!
