Not clicking the link so haven't read the story. However I assume it's something along the lines of the RSPCA storming in and removing animals that were already being cared for, on trumped up grounds of 'neglect'. The animals have probably been euthanised instead of being rehomed.
I'm guessing this because the RSPCA is absolutely renowned for this. It it not accountable or transparent - so a charity that was started with the best of intentions is now a money making enterprise that has turned into a bit of a monster. There are numerous stories out there of them doing this - and there are growing concerns over their lack of accountability.
It is a charity that I will never donate to, which is a shame because at branch level there are lovely, dedicated and hardworking people who are desperately trying to make a difference. But they are hamstrung by a greedy and blinkered head office, who are more interested in making headlines through prosecutions, than actually re-homing and helping the animals they are supposed to be caring for. The local branches don't get any money from central funds - they are expected to be entirely self-supporting. This isn't clear in the adverts that the charity runs. I wonder how many people put £1 in a tin, or sign up to £5 monthly DD thinking that they are funding local RSPCA services in their area.
The charity also has form for bullying people that it has deemed to be 'counter' to its activities or objectives. There was some publicity a while back about a particular lawyer who was defending people against the RSPCA, who was targeted by them as a result.
The owner of my local rescue cannot stand the RSPCA. She gets (understandably) worked up about the fact that she could achieve so much more with a fraction of the funding they have. It's a bitter pill to swallow when many of the dogs that end up in her care, do so because the RSPCA don't want to get involved. I honestly didn't believe it until I saw it myself - there have been some terrible cruelty cases where dogs have been kept in the most appalling conditions. Quite often they are dumped - and if you ring the RSPCA they tell you to contact the local dog wardens. If it doesn't have an owner then they aren't interested, as there is nobody to prosecute.
If you are concerned about animal welfare or rehoming animals, then support your local rescue centre or the Dogs Trust. At least then your money will be going towards genuinely helping care for animals.
