To clean out friend's fridge?

House/cat-sitting for friends for a couple of weeks while they are on holiday and we are between houses. WIBU to clean their rather grimy fridge and throw away some of the multitude of out of date jars? Found a few from 2013!

I'd be furious with you

You could clean the fridge but don't throw anything out. Well, unless there's a manky cucumber or something. But maybe they want the old 2013 jars for some reason or another.

I bet they would be chuffed to come home to a sparkling clean fridge!

Just phone or text her "i was just giving the fridge a quick whipe and saw xyz.
Should I give it a clear out for you?

BananaThePoet · 03/05/2016 21:15

Readabook1 - perfectly sensible suggestion - that's what I'd do. Check first and then fit in with what they suggest.

If think it very rude. Also, I know someone who kept food in fridge and then froze it waaaay out of date as it was the last favourites of 'x' that partner had before they died and they couldn't bear to get rid of it for years

You're there and using it, I think you're fine to clean it and throw out anything furry! Just say something smelt funny which implies you've done them a favour.

Better that than when my parents had someone looking after the house for a fortnight who didn't notice that their fridge, complete with ice box, had died. They noticed the second they opened the back door, when the smell hit them! No idea how the guy didn't notice the smell...or the small puddle! Hmm

Depends how close friends you are! If it's the type you had sleepovers with at school, asked for tampons as teenagers, and held their ponytail out of the way when they first got too drunk, that's the kind of friend that would just laugh and be grateful. If it's someone you just met a couple of years ago at NCT class, maybe not so much...

My mum cleans things like my fridge, microwave, toaster etc when she visits. I love it.
