It was a mug in the communal kitchen so didn't have an official owner. I deliberately threw it at he floor twice and put it in the bin. It's crime was the large letters that said "I hate thin people".

I think calling it "criminal damage" is a bit -
extremely OTT. It's a sweaty mug FFS. Not the crown Jewels

Floggingmolly · 30/04/2016 17:45

It can't be both "a colleague's mug" and "deffo didn't have an owner"...
So nobody will actually notice your little act of rebellion. How sad.

Rainbunny · 30/04/2016 17:45

Well you should replace it with a new mug, other than that I actually agree that it needed to be thrown away, imagine if someone brought in an "I hate fat people" mug!

TheCatsMeow · 30/04/2016 17:47

To be fair that mug sounds awful.

NannawifeofBaldr · 30/04/2016 17:47

Narp was the 'legalistic' comment directed at me?

My point was that what the OP did was wrong.

And if she'd been caught doing it would hardly have been career enhancing.

It's pretty odd and out there to take it upon yourself to smash something to pieces because you don't like it.

Why not just quietly talk to the boss and say you don't feel the mug is appropriate and ask to throw it out?

TheCatsMeow · 30/04/2016 17:48

Well you should replace it with a new mug, other than that I actually agree that it needed to be thrown away, imagine if someone brought in an "I hate fat people" mug!

OP should buy an "I hate fat people" mug and leave it exactly where the old mug was.

The person will get the message.

AdrenalineFudge · 30/04/2016 17:49

I don't believe a single word of this. If it's true you are a twat.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 30/04/2016 17:49

What if you saw someone wearing a T shirt with a similar slogan? Would you throw them to the floor and attempt to break their legs?

Kidnapped · 30/04/2016 17:50

You made me laugh, OP. Fear not - if someone had posted saying that their I Hate Thin People mug had been smashed at work they'd be getting the old:

  • Are you 12?
  • Probably someone who objects to your fattist agenda
  • Sounds like you have low-self esteem
  • Are you on glue?

It was ever thus.

NannawifeofBaldr · 30/04/2016 17:52

Catsmeow they won't get the message at all, because they will have no idea what happened to their mug.

StillYummy · 30/04/2016 17:52

Lol that can stay. I do have a sense of humour.

I don't think I want a I hate fat people mug in the office. I don't hate anyone based on there body. We have loads of spare mugs anyway but I will bring one in, because I have it. It says "love yourself" (came free with the house before anyone reads stuff into that).

This is a storm in a teacup really.

Yes I am proud of that.

RubbishMantra · 30/04/2016 17:54

OP, you are being a silly.

One Christmas I had mugs made with an image of my beautiful cat, wearing an awesome bonnet, crocheted especially for him.

I hate to think of somebody smashing a mug because they hate cats in bonnets.

He likes wearing the bonnet, (only on special occasions, mind) I'd have the scars to prove it otherwise.

I think you should replace the mug, with one that states, "I hate judgy pants".

TheCatsMeow · 30/04/2016 17:58

Catsmeow they won't get the message at all, because they will have no idea what happened to their mug.

If their mug has suddenly been replaced with an "I hate fat people" people one, it becomes clear it has offended someone.

justcheese · 30/04/2016 17:59

You could buy this as a replacement

PollyPerky · 30/04/2016 18:01

Is this a wind-up OP? Bored today?

Why didn't you like the mug? Are you thin?

Why didn't you just look at it, give a wry smile and carry on making your cuppa?

Goingtobeawesome · 30/04/2016 18:02

Why? Hmm

We'll possibly Cat but assuming that like most offices there are loads of mugs I'd like it's far more likely that no one will notice.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 30/04/2016 18:11

I think it might have been better to say to everyone "Hey, this mug is a bit crap isn't it? Anyone mind if I chuck it?"
That would have done more to raise awareness.
But I actually think we should change things in a communal space - there's a danger once somethings around that it just stays forever how ever much everyone hates it - because no-one takes responsibility/ dares to do anything about it.
Other people might be pleased to have a more cheerful alternative mug too?

HellonHeels · 30/04/2016 18:12

I'd like to see a pic of the 'cat wearing a crochet bonnet' mug please

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 30/04/2016 18:15

I'm concerned about the cat's ears. Does the bonnet have ear holes?

MetalMidget · 30/04/2016 18:17

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

MiddleClassProblem · 30/04/2016 18:17

If I worked in an office and saw a a colleague smash a mug on the floor (twice) I would mention it to HR just in case they were having a breakdown.
