to not want a deer in my freezer?

So we're putting the DC to bed earlier and DH casually drops into conversation that he will take them tomorrow morning to see his friend and pick up a deer. Not stopping there, he explains that they will have to skin the deer and chop it up for the freezer, at which point dc1 (4) dissolves into floods of tears. Luckily dc2 (2) wasn't paying much attention.
I am 33 weeks pregnant with dc3 and in the process of filling the limited remaining space in our upright freezer (NB not chest freezer!) with batch cooked meals in preparation for the busy time ahead and do not want the space to be filled with every conceivable cut of venison. Not that it would fit...nowhere near.
AIBU to have subsequently told DH that there is no way we will be collecting the deer tomorrow and that he was absolutely thoughtless to have gone into such detail with the DC?
In his defense, DH grew up in a rural area of a country where all aspects of farming and subsequent butchery were par for the course, and I love venison and will always welcome the odd joint of it during the season. I therefore don't think he's a complete knob, but just thoughtless in terms of space, timing (having not discussed it with me previously) and having been quite so detailed with the DC. AIBU?

I am proud of him actually, sorry if this is coming across as a smug stealth boast...wasn't my intention He sounds great and you can boast away! Grin

Hmmmm... I prefer venison to be honest. Moose is a rougher taste somehow. A bit stronger. Reindeer is nice - it has quite a distinct flavour and we eat it sliced very thinly, fried, with mashed spuds and lingonberry jam.
i do prefer venison though. The in laws arrive from the far north every so often with a freezer box Full of moose...

Natsku · 30/04/2016 09:09

Reindeer is the best tasting, have a lump of dried reindeer in the fridge actually, might go have a nibble now

dizzytomato · 30/04/2016 09:10

How big is this deer? We have a large freezer on our fridge and a stand alone freezer and even if it was empty I can't imagine being able to fit a deer. Not that I'm offering Grin unless it's the magnums

I agree he should have been more subtle, there's a balance between knowing the facts and traumatising children. I say this as a farmer's wife with a vegetarian 6 year old.

I found 2 frozen hamsters, a frozen magpie and a frozen squirrel two weeks ago in my chest meat freezer. DH's chest freezer has now been moved to the the other side of the garage to avoid him chucking things in the wrong freezer. I was fucking raging that my carefully organised freezer had dead furry and feathery things in it. his hobby is taxidermy in case anyone thinks we eat magpies, squirrels or hamsters btw.

magratsflyawayhair · 30/04/2016 10:49

To be fair, once butchered, everything takes up less space. I can fit half a lamb in the small drawer of my small freezer.

PissPotPourri · 30/04/2016 10:55

Ha ha spring, that's pretty bad. I love the thought of stuffed hamsters Grin

There's a big difference between knowing where your meat comes from and hearing about the gory details of how exactly it gets from live animal to joint of meat. I know plenty of adults who are squeamish about it but still eat meat. I'd definitely not be telling a 4 year old too much information on the subject unless they specifically asked.

I've got plenty of room in my freezer OP! Smile

YANBU He shouldn't have exposed your DC to such information before they were ready and he should have checked whether or not you had room to store the meat before committing to taking it. I expect he just got a bit caught up in the idea and didn't think it through.

PissPotPourri · 30/04/2016 11:10

pseudo, exactly.

And there is a big difference between bog standard cow, pig and lamb and poor Bambi.

Lweji · 30/04/2016 11:21

Is Bambi still popular?

dizzytomato · 30/04/2016 12:55

Propably not as popular as Peppa Pig and Timmy Time Grin

I remember reading how someone on here described pork to their toddler as "peppa pig". That was possibly one of the most twisted things I've read on here.

MardleBum · 30/04/2016 13:18

Hang on, surely it's not even venison season? Confused

NotCitrus · 30/04/2016 14:28

Mmm, venison...
Venison shepherd's pie is my favourite. Friend's mum was in your situation years ago and turned most of a deer into stew and other ready meals.

My kids seem fascinated by dead animals. Dd likes to say "hello, piggies" to the pork joints at the butchers and ds still gets upset when we don't spend long enough admiring the fish display in the supermarket.

I'm sure you can squeeze a good joint and some trimmings in the freezer. Though your DP can do bedtime for the next couple days!
