To just call a fanny a fanny?

Apologies if this has been done before/to death but i am new to this Mumsnet Lark (posting not lurking, I have happily lurked for years). What on earth word do you give to your toddler to describe their girl parts? I have and always will, have a fanny, where as I am aware of friends who have foofs, fairies (could cause some confusion when you go to put the fairy on top of the Christmas tree) lady gardens vulvas and so on. I see no reason to pretty things up, and always arrive back at good old trusty fanny in the end having massively overthunk things. When DD2 is a little bit older I will furnish her with all the proper words, but are fanny and willie (not that she will encounter any of THOSE until she is at least 40 given that I am a single Mum and our house is happily a man free zone nowadays, and boyfriends will not be permitted until she is at least 40) acceptable? Is fanny a bit coarse?

Me and my sister used to call each other cunt face as a sort of term of endearment. I'd forgotten until now.
I know cunt is shocking and a terrible insult and i know when not to use it but I've never understood why really. What is so awful/disgusting about female genitals? Half the population has one and a large proportion of the opposite sex seems to be quite fond of them.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/04/2016 21:01

Jay - yep, I'm West country too, seems fanny is sweet and innocent thereGrin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/04/2016 21:02

And yes, berk is rhyming slang.

cbigs · 29/04/2016 21:03

I use cunt-eyes as a term of endearment. Like ' alright cunt-eyes how's it going?' And cunty bollocks. In the same way . I know some find it offensive it just isn't in my circles really . Any more than dick head or cock end etc ...

SabineUndine · 29/04/2016 21:05

Vagina? I don't see anything wrong with 'fanny' tbh. When I was small I wasn't even aware that I had anything there that needed a name, that's how precious my mother was about it!

HildegardVonBrixham · 29/04/2016 21:06

What about Volvo?

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 29/04/2016 21:10

I wonder how dickhead came about

It doesn't have anything to do with phalluses on foreheads, but refers to the glans of the penis. It is a synonym for bellend.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/04/2016 21:10

Lily, flower. front bottom etc are far more offensive by their tweeness.

I can't get worked up about insisting it's vulva not vagina, does anyone one really get confused if vagina is used?

Oh and all those who prefer vulva do you say buttocks as well?

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 29/04/2016 21:11

You do realise cunt eyes is a racial slur don't you?

ColinFirthsGirth · 29/04/2016 21:14

I can't stand fanny and it is definitely considered coarse where I am from. I think you should just call it whatever you want. I wouldn't worry about cute names.

RedOnHerHedd · 29/04/2016 21:17

It's called a foof or vagina around here.

My nan used to call me Fanny-Anne too. Wonder where that phrase came from? I'd forgotten about it til I read it further back in the thread.

I sometimes call it a Fanny, DH refers to it as Fanny, but I think it's a bit crude for a child to use.

dementedma · 29/04/2016 21:19

Another one here in Scotland where "fanny" would be totally unacceptable language for a child.

Well you learn something new everyday. I always assumed it was because of the saying 'men think with their dicks'.

SaucyJack · 29/04/2016 21:29

"The growler"?

I'm from west country and always used fanny. However I was very embarrassed when DS (4yrs) shouted (in swimming pool changing room) "Mom, why have you got a HAIRY FANNY?". Blush I don't think I've ever felt so embarrassed.

After reading this I might change it to private parts, girly parts (at least they don't sound twee) or Wilma (just because I think Wilma and Willy go together well)

HalfpintPixie · 29/04/2016 21:39

What about 'flange'? That's one the lads round here used to yell
"Show us yer flange, love!"

ALaughAMinute · 29/04/2016 21:44

Fanny is very definitely coarse - yuck!

KayTee87 · 29/04/2016 21:46

Tbh I'd be tempted to use the correct terms. I was told the word vagina when I was small but either misheard it or didn't like that word and called it my 'China thing' for ages BlushGrin
I think fanny is rude, again in Scotland so maybe it's not rude everywhere?

kennypppppppp · 29/04/2016 21:46

we refer to it as a lady sandwich

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/04/2016 21:49

'lady sandwich' sounds like some kind of group sex act.

MrsPeel1 · 29/04/2016 21:50

We have an 18 month old girl and have just been discussing this very thing. We have a 3 yo DS and he's always had a willy, although we also refer to his penis, his testicles and his balls. Despite this I'm not keen on vulva for my DD. I reckon this is probably some sort of social conditioning. I can't really remember what my mum called it when we were young, although she is a biology teacher and was always very precise about everything (I had proper sex ed with hand drawn diagrams with babies going through the birth canal in one particular picture. Head tilted an everything - I reckon my mum could have been an art teacher). It definitely wasn't anything coy. I refer to my own in passing as my 'one' although that comes from a private teenage joke rather than anything else. So I'm still no closer to workout nbmput what I'll call it with my daughter. Today at nursery they referred to her 'nappy area' which was far to twee for my liking.

Ickythumpsmum · 29/04/2016 21:51

My DS1 (7) asked me what a girls penis is called when we were in Intersport tonight. I almost said 'Vagina' but my husband said 'not now' and caught me just in time.
DS1 has really embraced the word penis. He uses it frequently. I'm dreading him catching on to Vagina, but it seems ridiculous that I keep this info from him. I read this thread to get some inspiration, but other than 'private parts' I'm not convinced.... I guess he'll be running around saying 'vagina' unless someone can suggest the perfect solution. ( I know he should have the manners to shut up about it, but I don't entirely trust him once he's out of my range.)

YonicTrowel · 29/04/2016 21:56

Another who is baffled that two "c-v-cc-y" words are fine (willy and tummy), and that many think Minnie is fine, but fanny, which is exactly the same word shape, is "coarse"
