To demand people keep their dogs away from me on the seafront

TigerPath · 29/04/2016 07:16

I'm sick of random dogs coming up to sniff me and DS or getting under my feet. All dogs make me nervous even small ones. And I hate it when they cock their leg on my pram wheels Angry

So now when a dog comes up to me or just before it reaches me I shout to the owner (politely but firmly) 'please keep your dog away from me/my pram'
Most oblige but a number are rude! Yesterday a woman retorted crossly 'but it's the sea-front'. I replied 'they should be on leads' and got a mouthful of abuse. There is a bloody great sign saying 'dogs should be on leads on the promenade'!! I wouldn't care if people kept them to heel but I don't want them touching me, my pram or tripping me up Angry

I hope you or a member of your family never have the misfortune to be caught in an earthquake or terrorist explosion Shining and require the services of a (large breed) rescue dog to locate you amongst the rubble. Smile

Mistigri · 30/04/2016 11:11

The size of the dog is completely irrelevant. The important factor is the willingness of the owner to keep their animal under control.

My own experience is that owners of bigger dogs tend to be a bit more cautious about their dogs' behaviour because they are aware that large dogs can be perceived as threatening or dangerous. The most annoying dog owners are the ones who think that because their small dog wouldn't hurt a fly (which I am sure is generally true) that random strangers will be OK with being pawed by it!

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 11:19

If a small dog jumps at me I can push it away easily, a large dog can knock me over, I'm not saying size restriction would solve the problem of dogs but it would help
I'd like to see more dog free open spaces, I wonder if dog free towns would be popular

There are too many dogs and it seems to be fashionable these days to have several dogs, people trying to increase thier status playing dog top trumps
'my dog is a killing machine but I'm so alpha that I have it totally under control, look here's a picture of my mastif with my baby just to prove it'
Or ' I'm such a dog person that I have a pack of huskies'

YANBU OP.

I live right by the beach and several times each summer we get lead-less dogs running up the slipway, through our driveway and in through the patio doors.

This sucks because they are covered in sand, our cats get understandably upset and I have to clean myself and the house thoroughly after seeing said dog off the property as DS is severely allergic to dogs.

It's totally unacceptable but I've never had more than a vague apology from the dog owners concerned.

It's deeply selfish IMO.

Bees can be trained to detect drugs

mrgrouper · 30/04/2016 12:12

Why are you so afraid of dogs? Have you been bitten in the past? The vast majority of dogs are not vicious. With the ones that are there is normally a trigger, some have fear aggression, some food aggression.
You should spend more time around dogs. Just like humans, the vast majority do not want to hurt you. Plus your children will also grow up with a fear of dogs unless you expose them to friendly pets.

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 12:12

Irt would be entirely feasible for pet dogs to be small and a few larger breeds maintained as working dogs where they are still necessary

No one needs an Irish wolfhound, probably most large breeds could be miniaturized, all dogs are varieties of one species the genome of which has proved endlessly elastic thus far

kali110 · 30/04/2016 12:13

0h yes so what if a load of dog breeds die out Hmm
'Threatening' 'shitting'
See, just as i predicted, ridiculous posts slagging pets off.
shinning lets hope then that you or your family never have eyesight problems then because i assume you won't want a guide dog then?
People who get stuck in the mountains, or people with mental health or additional needs who have assistant dogs, well just fuck them then eh?.
My friend had 3 dogs, 2 medium size and 1 large and she could control them all.
She has rehabilitated ones that have been abused.
Not everybody is encapable.
How about we put a restriction on how many kids people have?
They shit, cause havoc, make noise, can be uncontrollable and irritate people too!
No, because that would be ridiculous.

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 12:14

I'm not afraid of dogs generally
I just find them a massive nuisance

kali110 · 30/04/2016 12:15

Bees! Yes because we have vast quantities of them..

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 12:15

Kail calm down, why so aggressive?

kali110 · 30/04/2016 12:15

I find some people's kids a massive nuisance but i'm not suggesting we restrict them..

mrgrouper · 30/04/2016 12:15

That is a good point kali110 I have Asperger's and my little Benji is essential for my welfare. He is there to calm me if I have a meltdown and when I am depressed it is walking Benj that pulls me out of depression.

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 12:17

Kali, I repeat....it would be entirely feasible for pet dogs to be small and a few larger breeds maintained as working dogs where they are still necessary

No one needs an Irish wolfhound, probably most large breeds could be miniaturized, all dogs are varieties of one species the genome of which has proved endlessly elastic thus far

mrgrouper · 30/04/2016 12:17

another article about Chris Packham, who also has Asperger's, and how his dogs help him....

kali110 · 30/04/2016 12:17

Not aggressive just fed up of how the thread has gone, excatly how predicated..
Simply giving you answers to your scenarios Confused

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 12:18

Little Benji sounds just the ticket, he's little and does the job perfectly

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 12:19

Small dogs are plenty
We don't need huge ones

kali110 · 30/04/2016 12:19

So we should just kill of yet another species because to some people they are a nusiance?
Haven't we destroyed enough things?
Thankgod it's not a reality Confused

kali110 · 30/04/2016 12:20

No shinning, you don't. Please don't speak for me.
I have no issue with any breed.

mrgrouper · 30/04/2016 12:20

he is also one of PETAs cutest rescue mutts in the UK and RSPCAs best rescue dog

TheSolitaryBoojum · 30/04/2016 12:27

Dog mace, that's the answer. Effective within a metre or so.
So if they stay out of range, they''ll be fine.

AlpacaLypse · 30/04/2016 12:28

This is a forum post about the Swiss dog licencing system, which I would love to see introduced into the UK.

TheSolitaryBoojum · 30/04/2016 12:40

Good idea.
Pity the Swiss aren't part of the EC, that's a set of laws I'd support.

mrgrouper · 30/04/2016 12:54

I remember when I was walking my (now deceased) Dobermann in a park. Dogs were allowed off lead in the park and my Dobermann was walking quietly next to me, not causing any trouble.
A guy shouted "my kids do not like dogs, put that thing on a lead". I responded "my dogs do not like kids, put those things on a lead then".
He would have probably punched me if I was not stood next to a 7 stone Dobermann.
