To demand people keep their dogs away from me on the seafront

I'm sick of random dogs coming up to sniff me and DS or getting under my feet. All dogs make me nervous even small ones. And I hate it when they cock their leg on my pram wheels Angry

So now when a dog comes up to me or just before it reaches me I shout to the owner (politely but firmly) 'please keep your dog away from me/my pram'
Most oblige but a number are rude! Yesterday a woman retorted crossly 'but it's the sea-front'. I replied 'they should be on leads' and got a mouthful of abuse. There is a bloody great sign saying 'dogs should be on leads on the promenade'!! I wouldn't care if people kept them to heel but I don't want them touching me, my pram or tripping me up Angry

AIBU??

Spring dont be silly I'm not trying to make a case against assistance dogs, there isnt one to be made
pet dogs who are a pain in the arse for other people in public places that is my peeve, surely it's patently obvious?

JeanGenie23 · 30/04/2016 22:51

shining the only issue with your last comment is that it's blinding clear from this thread that it doesn't take much to annoy a variety of some people. greyhorses puts it very well.

TooOldForGlitter · 30/04/2016 22:51

I take pleasure in the suffering of dairy animals? Are you for real? I can't save the world on my own, I do what I realistically can do in my life. FWIW I don't eat dairy products. I eat free range eggs.

LoopyNuts · 30/04/2016 22:52

I'm a dog owner. YANBU. I wish other dog owners would put their bloody dogs on leads. They come up to my dogs. Therefore they are it under control. Pisses me off. Dogs should be under control. Most dog owners do not have the level of control required to keep their dog to heel. They should be apologising to op.

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 22:52

I understand and agree completely that dogs should not be approaching people
good we agree :o

if I see a dog off a lead in a public place, especially a large dog I am wary and I watch it's beaviour very carefully in case it shows signs of running over, if I'm with my partner, no probs he's a large man and has a way with dogs, he could probably pacify a tiger (joke) I'm a small woman who is wary of large animals

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 22:54

I eat free range eggs
those chickens have horrific lives, just so you can eat eggs, how can you claim to see animals as equals...blatant hypocrisy!

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 22:57

they are huge and an intimidating breed
just out of interest Greyhorses, why would a person want to keep animals which are intimidating and a potential threat to humans?

TooOldForGlitter · 30/04/2016 23:02

Which chickens have horrific lives? The ones that live freely and happily on my sister's land where I go to get my eggs? Those chickens?

JeanGenie23 · 30/04/2016 23:02

Shining horses are a large and intimating breed if you are already scared of them. However to most they are a beautiful animal that is loving and gentle. Large dogs, and small dogs, are wonderful pets if looked after properly.

TooOldForGlitter · 30/04/2016 23:03

The ones that are all rescued battery hens. Those ones?

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 23:06

Shining horses are a large and intimating breed too bloody right they are, thank god I dont have to worry about them too when I go running!

listen I am accosted by dogs 6 or 7 times a week, every fucking time I go out running someone's fucking dog chases me jumps up at me etc etc, thats why I am so vocal about the subjectAngry

Greyhorses · 30/04/2016 23:08

To me they are no threat, they are made out by the media to be dangerous (I have german shepherds in case your wondering) but in reality they are no more dangerous to me than a mouse would be. In fact I would be more likely to be bitten from a mouse than either dog. They are also very indifferent to people which I suppose puts some people off as they aren't your typical waggy tailed Labrador, more of a walk past and mind your own business type of dog.

If I want to keep them then that's my choice to make and im confident it's the right one for my family, maybe as I was brought up with the breed and have never had a moments trouble from a dog (I can say differently with people!) I do however ensure that they don't bother anyone else but I can't do much about the way they look offending small children Confused

Plus I like the fact I can walk alone in the dead of night and the scum of society will leave me alone Grin

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 23:12

The ones that live freely and happily on my sister's land where I go to get my eggs
oh give over, we both know that you dont treat all animals as equals just a select few that you self indulgently treat as honorary humans

JeanGenie23 · 30/04/2016 23:15

I find it hard to believe you come into contact with so many poor dog owners that allow their pets to accost you whilst running 6-7 times per week! Hmm

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 23:17

They are also very indifferent to people if off the lead would they chase a runner?
or even look longingly at the runner as if wishing they could also be running ( I see that sort of look on a dogs face quite often)

purpleshortcake · 30/04/2016 23:18

Last week we spent a day at the beach; signs saying "no dogs on the beach between " Good Friday and Summer Solstice" (or something similar). My 3 year old twins were having fun running around kicking a ball when a large dog bounded towards my daughter (in a friendly manner wanting to play with the ball) and knocked her completely over.

She was crying so hard she couldn't get any noise out...As an adult size- wise it would be like a large horse barrelling towards you. Very slightly terrifying?

I was with a friend (dog owner) who despite seeing how terrified my daughter was, insisted that the signs saying "no dogs on the beach" were unreasonable.

We had to leave shortly afterwards as I couldn't calm my daughter down (other dogs, not even on leads on the beach) and we all had to cut a fun day short. It's probably all my fault though as I wasn't able to convince her that doggies aren't going to hurt her...

JeanGenie23 · 30/04/2016 23:19

Do you get scared if a dog looks in your direction? If you do then you need to find a way to over come your fear because that's irrational

TooOldForGlitter · 30/04/2016 23:20

I treat all animals the way I'd want to be treated. Not sure why you are so determined to 'catch me out'. I have a rat in my garden atm. He's come because of the bird food. My neighbours want me to ring the council to get exterminators in. Instead I'm blocking the holes with chicken wire and letting the dog chase him off. Why are you so invested in disproving me?

JeanGenie23 · 30/04/2016 23:22

Purple that's awful and that shouldn't have happened to your daughter. No one on this thread would say that's ok. The sign should have been adhered to.

My point is that where there are no signs, if you are in a public place to be used by all, both parents and dog owners have a joint responsibility in ensuring safety. Dogs are not any less entitled to be running on grass, or a beach, if it's has not be otherwise stated

Shining12 · 30/04/2016 23:22

I am not making it up, since I started running I have become quite good (I think) at anticipating dog behavior and am less nervous of them than I used to be

I see quite a lot of 'dominant' behaviour from large off the lead dogs, they push past me, get in my way or force me off the path, run at me and swerve at the last minute etc

if I'm with my other half most people are much more careful to keep their dogs out of the way...on my own apparently small woman = fair game :(
I should get a panther
pet arms race

TooOldForGlitter · 30/04/2016 23:25

Greyhorses I had a rescue GS before my current dog, he was fantastic 😊

Greyhorses · 30/04/2016 23:26

They wouldn't chase you no Shining, but I couldn't promise they wouldn't look at you! Grin

Maybe you should find somewhere else to run as honestly in years and years of walking, riding horses and running I can count on one hand the number of times I've been approached by a loose dog let alone chased? Ive also never been bitten despite working with 40+ strange dogs every single day for 6 years. Im not saying it dosent happen to you but it must be a particulally bad area for dog training or something!

TooOldForGlitter · 30/04/2016 23:27

Shining I'd be fuming if I was running and experienced what you've described. That's the owners fault though. As I said earlier, any twit can own a dog. Much as any twit can breed.

Greyhorses · 30/04/2016 23:28

Tooold mine are fantastic family dogs, we currently have two who are pathetic at home despite the scary looking barking when leaving the house! Smile

TooOldForGlitter · 30/04/2016 23:32

Mine was an excellent deterrent! He was terrified of all other dogs, men in hats or hoodies and cats but he was brilliant at bristling up and curling his lip. He'd run away if it came to anything but I didn't tell people that! His favourite place was lying all over one or more kids snoring 😊
