Jemeppelle I think it's just that if people didn't state that they were dog owners others on here would assume they must be dog haters! It's so we know there is a balance of views from different demographics, that's all.
I do not believe dogs it's necessary for dogs to be on the lead in all public places -commons and parks and woods for example, but I would NEVER let my dogs off the lead anywhere on pavements or along roadsides and built up areas for their own safety as much as anything else. If they bolted after a cat and went into the road, not only could they be killed but the resulting accident could kill/hurt someone else.
Neither would I ever choose to exercise them in close proximity to young families playing in the park or whatever, I always go as far away from non-dog owners as possible, just to be on the safe side, before I let my dogs off. But there's no way I am taking them to fields, woods or beaches and then keeping them on the lead the whole time - what's the point?
I take care to call my dogs away from going too close to strangers especially if they have young children with them but I agree with the PP who said that if not most in my opinion, but certainly many dog owners are massively entitled. That famous line 'don't worry they won't hurt you' is hardly the point. Some people are frightened anyway, and would rather not take the chance.
If it's an area that's legal, safe and spacious enough to let my dogs off the leash them I am certainly not going to put mine back on just because someone else demands it. I find it's most often other dog owners that request this, but when in close proximity to other dogs mine are much less likely to show signs of nervous aggression off the lead when strangers or other dogs approach them, than when they are on it. If other dog owners don't like it they are welcome to walk the other way. Having said that, I've had a row with another dog owner because her three dogs were being total PITAs, bullying us in a pack, invading our space, jumping up at us, nipping at my DH and annoying/intimidating our dogs, but she just assumed as we were dog owners she didn't have to pay any attention to how hers were behaving because they were 'just playing'
and we'd be fine with it. When she heard my DH getting angry and shooing hers away she started having a go at him! I heard from other dog walkers afterwards that she was famous in the area for not controlling her dogs properly and pissing other people off.
