To think milk doesn't all taste the same?

We buy green top from various places over the week and despite what do thinks. it doesn't not taste the same.

Some taste very watery, other brands taste much nicer.

DP can't understand it and doesn't taste it but the dc know, dd often won't drink it if it's not the right brand!

We go through about 5-6 pints of Semi skimmed a day so they get whatever is in the shop and I don't worry about use by dates as it doesn't stay in the fridge long enough to get near a use by date :)

LifeBeginsNow · 28/04/2016 23:07

We drink so much milk a week and we can tell the difference between different supermarkets.

Tesco seems to be our favourite and Asda tastes awful. It's not so bad in or on things but drinking it is just vile.

JustBeingJuliet · 28/04/2016 23:11

We've converted to cravendale here. Ds was never a milk drinker but he loves cravendale and I must admit, it has a nicer taste and lasts longer.

Toffeecrispy · 28/04/2016 23:12

When i use to buy cows milk i thought it all tasted the same, usually only brought the supermarkets own brand.
Tried almond milk which is like water
Tried coconut milk which is like water
Stuck with soya now which does taste a lot different to cows but now cant stand the taste of cows

Sidge · 28/04/2016 23:14

It's funny to read this tonight, I bought some milk from Lidl yesterday and it tastes really sweet!

I normally buy semi skimmed from Morrisons or Sainsburys and they taste the same, so I was really surprised at the taste of the Lidl milk. It was horrid.

comfortblankie · 28/04/2016 23:15

Not really fussy on brand, but for cereal it has to be ice cold milk from a tetrapak carton. Plastic jugs have a taste Confused

At the moment I take milk in tea, coffee and porridge so I stick to skimmed.

Once in Germany I bought 6% milk by accident and thought I was going to die, it was very strong so never again!

LuisSuarezTeeth · 28/04/2016 23:18

Milk taste can vary according to the time of year and what the cows are fed on. I only drink milk in coffee, so I don't notice, but it's definitely a thing.

yoink · 28/04/2016 23:22

When on holiday in America, the milk was sweet! Blergh.

Why IS that?

SueTrinder · 28/04/2016 23:25

I can't believe all the Cravendale fans, I think it tastes rank. But we get organic milk from a local small dairy in glass bottles on the doorstep so I'm spoilt.

In the old days the biggest factor in differences in taste would have been the cows diet and time of year (as a PP said fresh grass in the summer vs corn and silage in the winter makes a difference), now I suspect the plastic the supermarket milk is in and the homogenisation method may be bigger factors.

Junosmum · 28/04/2016 23:30

YABU, all milk tastes disgusting!

You yanbu though. Milk will taste different because it comes from different area, different cattle etc, we have very little homogeneous milk in this country.

Firstlawofholes · 28/04/2016 23:42

We go through 12 pints week - I only take it in tea but DH and pre-teen DSs go through gallons pure and on cereals, plus I use it for sauces etc. We're flexible between Sainsbury's or Tesco, don't buy organic since I found out that it contains a lot less iodine and other essentials than regular.

The one thing that would get our entire family up in arms would be someone trying to sell us soy or almond milk! Bleurgh, rather no milk at all.

nebulae · 28/04/2016 23:46

Another vote for Cravendale here. Tastes much nicer than regular milk. All the clag is filtered out. Definitely worth a few extra pennies in my opinion. The Tesco Pure one is equally good.

Im sorry i havent read the thread but each time i go past it on the board I read:
'To think mil doeant all taste the same'

Im on a night shift so have looked several times and wondered how mother in laws taste different lol.

Sorry tangent over Grin

Junosmum - I thought most milk these days is homogenised?

BananaInPyjama · 29/04/2016 03:10

My daughter (primary school age) can tell the difference. She loves milk from the Midlands Sainsburys but not from London.
I can't tell the difference but she always raves about the delicious milk when we go to a particular friend's place and has done since age 3.
She also likes Scottish milk and is less keen on that from Yorkshire supermarkets.
I thought it was an age thing but it might be that she is a supertaster.

Out2pasture · 29/04/2016 03:58

milk varies in taste based on what the cattle eat/are fed.
same with butter.

FindoGask · 29/04/2016 06:19

It definitely varies. I buy full fat milk and the Yeo Valley organic is noticeably creamier - I could identify it in a blind tasting.

Idefix · 29/04/2016 06:30

Yanbu milk from plastic containers tastes different, some brands esp the organic ones taste of plastic especially when added to my coffee.
Where I live at the moment milk comes in tetrapaks and never has this problem.

No one else in my family agrees with me though.

Mari50 · 29/04/2016 07:18

Milk has always varied in taste, I've always noticed and I'm not meaning brands or shops. Even when I was young and we got it delivered in bottles some were nice and some have this weird funky taste. I imagine it's the same way some strawberries taste great and others don't, there's only so much control of the finished product when nature is involved.

GrayJane · 29/04/2016 13:23

As a dedicated milk drinker for most of my life, I recently changed to soya. After three weeks, I knew I'd never (knowingly) drink cow's milk again. It tastes absolutely disgusting to me now. I'm also less bloated and my skin in a bit clearer. I'm delighted to have cut cow's milk out of my life and surprised at how easy it's been.

Scone1nSixtySeconds · 29/04/2016 13:54

Ds has favourite milks. Top ranking for him is Muller, then Morrisons and then Sainsburys.

He won't drink tesco, asda, lidl, Aldi or cravendale.

Mississippi26 · 10/05/2020 23:13

_Hi, all the 'clag' as you call it, is definitely taken out, you're right about that, but all the goodness is taken out too.
It's like when you drink zerowater. Water put through a filtration system.
It takes everything out of it, the bad & the good, hence the name 'zerowater', there's nothing in it, just H2O.

haba · 10/05/2020 23:58

We only have organic milk. The Waitrose (duchy) is far creamier, and isn't homogenised. Sainsbury's and Yeo valley are homogenised. They're all nice, far nicer than non-'organic' milk.
DD has to have lactose free. She says nicest is the arla organic, then arla ordinary then Sainsbury's own (there wasn't organic option when she first became ill from dairy).

GrumpyHoonMain · 11/05/2020 00:01

British dairy milk is regulated and so should taste very similar.

YourWinter · 11/05/2020 01:40

My favourite is Yeo Valley organic semi-skimmed. Waitrose - the Duchy Organic range - has a thick layer of cream on top, which I hate.
