Safe Play Sand for Sandpit?

FriskyFrog · 27/04/2016 15:58

Sorry, posting for traffic.

Just bought a sandpit and was about to order some nice cheap playsand from Tesco when I found out about crystalline silica and asbestos tremolite. Both known carcinogens. Common to find them in play sand apparently if the sand is manufactured from crushed rock instead of being natural sand taken from a beach or river.

Am looking at playsand that claims to be non toxic and conforms to BS EN71-3-2013, e.g. ELC and others, but the standard does not cover silica or asbestos tremolite, and none of them say how the sand is produced / sourced.

Has anyone already done the homework on this and know of a properly safe playsand?

I am rather shocked to see that Tesco's playsand is silica sand now.

More importantly, acquire a sandbox with a lid. Otherwise, neighborhood cats will use it for a litter box. That is an immediate health hazard.

So I'm guessing your kids will never eat processed meat under your roof? They're a class 1 carcinogen.

WhiteDust · 21/08/2018 04:14

Nothing to add would fall on deaf ears even if I was a scientist specialising in the properties of sand but finding the OP's responses fascinating.
Blatantly placemarking.

Changed my mind, I have got something to add...

There are people in this world who generate, interpret, and share toxicological information about potentially hazardous substances in our environment.
These organisations specialise in scientific research developing and applying new technologies for modern toxicology and molecular biology.

I would write to them with your concerns re. play sand OP. Maybe they haven't thought about the possible dangers you describe. Grin
Don't forget to let us all know what they say.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 27/07/2021 10:16

I just buy the cheap stuff from Asda. Didn't research it at all - you could say..........................I buried my head..................in the.........................(here it comes)............................sand.

TimetohittheroadJack · 27/07/2021 10:16

I'd say the risk of you going mental and killing someone (probably DH) as every inch of your house is covered in fucking sand is higher than the carcinogen risk.

nicknamehelp · 27/07/2021 10:38

Wish I had the time when mine were little to research which sand to put in their sand pit.........
