My six year old DS spends less and less time playing with me. He is an only child and has taken to playing in his room a lot, whilst listening to story cds.

I try to entice him out to play with me but he keeps wanting to be alone. Is this normal for a 6 year old?

How much time should they spend alone? For e.g now he will happily play alone in his room or the garden from school time until supper at 6. And at the weekend from 8am-11am . I am really worried AIBU?

I think you should stop worrying.
I think it's a really important skill for children to learn and as long as he is playing with peers at school or other activities then you should relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

I would say you ab a bit u, but it is hard to comment without knowing the child. Some people, including children just like their own space. If you think he has a busy day at school, and could just want peace. It is great that he is self sufficient and able to play on his own without getting bored.

I used to like playing on my own - could make up all sorts of games in my head. Maybe you could entice him to do some things 'side by side' like drawing? Or he listens to a story in the kitchen whilst you cook?

I turned out nice and sociable, although I'm still happy with my own company so don't be too worried!

Sounds normal to me. Without wishing to diminish your offer to play, I found myself shelved in terms of playmate for my son around that age. He does however like to tell me at length about what he's built or played with afterwards. I'm just not in the gang anymore.Grin

It's great he can play quite happily on his own. So many children I know need constant attention and stimulation, it's draining for the parents.
