You're on fb to check in ffs then go with your "oh I'll pm you" - it's just so attention seeking! Angry

Czerny88 · 24/04/2016 20:26

I've never understood why people post "I'll PM you" on a forum (other than to seek attention). Surely by the time the recipient has read the post on the thread they will have seen the PM?

Similarly, people who don't have anything useful or interesting to contribute, but "don't want to read and run". Well no-one knows you've read the thread unless you post.

And also people who announce to a forum that they won't be contributing for a while for some reason. Do they really think they're so important?

I realise these are all trivial irritations...

Only1scoop · 24/04/2016 20:27

Ah I see Thanks Shark Smile

KoalaDownUnder · 24/04/2016 20:27

To be fair, I don't mind so much if someone checks in and simultaneously posts why they're there, as in 'all okay, skateboard accident, waiting for X-Rays' or something.

It's the mysterious 2 am check-in to A&E with no comment that reeks of attention-whore. Don't unnecessarily worry everyone you know, you arse!

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 24/04/2016 20:29

I check in. I do say why, though! I've been an inpatient six times in the last year. It tells people where I am so they can visit if they want/they don't come see me at home and I'm not there/nobody worries. I live on my own so otherwise people drop by randomly.

It also avoids me having to update 9 million people separately on how A&E went etc. There's only so many ways to say "they kept me in again!".

Bernicles24 · 24/04/2016 20:32

I don't mind if they check in. I don't mind if they are attention seeking. I DO mind that they don't tell us the full story. Attention seeking tw@ts. Either tell us why you're there or don't post at all.

ProfYaffle · 24/04/2016 20:35

Dh has had a long term health condition for the last 12 years. He goes through phases of active treatment and surveillance. I check in at the hospital all the flippin' time because we're there all the flippin' time. He's having radiotherapy so we've going every day for 6 weeks. I don't check in every day but I do when there are updates or anecdotes or we've hit a milestone. It's not attention seeking it's just every day life.

Vaguebooking in A&E at 2 am is pretty unforgivable though!

yougetme · 24/04/2016 20:36

I have lots of friends on facebook. I have divided them according to how I know them and only have close family on my newsfeed.
I can still check up on them if I want but I dont have the annoying ones constant chatter going on. I can take a look or not when I have the fancy to.

tass1960 · 24/04/2016 20:36

... or my work colleague who checked in at A&E with an abcess on her nether regions and then proceeded to update every sodding step of the way - having a catheter, having IV antibiotics, getting it drained - was only surprised there were no pics - other problem is she is such a liar (you know she is lying because her lips are moving type of person) it could all have been made up 😱

sharknad0 · 24/04/2016 20:36

don't want to read and run
I have seen a few when the story was really sad, and people just wanted to say something nice and try to be a bit supportive, without having any real helpful tip. These I can understand

Minisoksmakehardwork · 24/04/2016 20:49

Oh they're not just vaguebookers then op, they're hospital day-trippers. I have never understood why people take a whole entourage on a trip to A&E. Even if everyone happens to have been out together and it's quicker to go than drop other's off first. There's usually a cafe area where non-essential bodies can hang around. Everyone piling in just makes A&E look busier than it is and takes seats away from people who genuinely need them.

MyLlamasGoneBananas · 24/04/2016 20:54

I always check in at the hospital. I'm there at least once a week these days. Sadly it's the only place I usually go to these days. It's not attention seeking. Most if nitcall my friends know what's wrong with me. This is a very big and main part of my life right now. I share what's going on - that's the point of social media I thought!

The pm me stuff though I do agree is a bit silly but perhaps they might be reaching out?

Czerny88 · 24/04/2016 21:00

shark Yes, fair point, if simply posting anything at all is going to prove helpful / supportive.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 24/04/2016 21:05

I checked in on Facebook when I was in hospital, as I was very poorly, on my own, and was very scared. I couldn't type coherently or precisely, so fb was easier. When everyone disapproves of attention seekers, it's rather tricky if you actually need some attention!

Stratter5 · 24/04/2016 21:07

How lovely Hmm

I check in because it's fucking boring being stuck in bed on a ward with bugger all to do. At least I can catch up with friends if I'm on Facebook.

Just scroll past if it pisses you off, or limit them in your news feed.

MyLlamasGoneBananas · 24/04/2016 21:56

Stratter5 - youve put it better than me. Yes FB is something to do when bored out of my brain with the long waiting that is inevitable on any hospital trip.

Hulababy · 25/04/2016 07:33

I think those who it bothers so much need to either friend full or unfollow more people on their FB settings. It's really easy to avoid too much of what you don't like about social media.

I have long since stopped worrying about what other people do and don't posted. If I like it I read it. If I don't I either scroll by , hide , unfollow or defriend. It really is quite a simple solution.

I also have fairly strict settings - relic of having worked in a prison and had to have it then - and have yet to meet anyone who has ever had an issues after checking in somewhere. I'm sure it may have happened once or twice to someone at some point - but it really isn't common at all, anything like it!

Katz · 25/04/2016 07:50

I used Facebook to let people know what was going on with DH when he had repeated cardiac episodes, he kept collapsing and being rushed into A&E. It's was a really useful way of not having to repeat the info to everyone and I could get to bed at a decent time rather than phoning round everyone. The same message that went on Facebook went out on whatsap and by text. I'd have been on the phone for hours otherwise. I could then catch up with people in the morning on my terms.

TheNaze73 · 25/04/2016 07:59

It's only Facebook. Ignore the attention seeking cocks. There should be a " you ok Hun" button....,
Ignore it!

BalthazarImpresario · 25/04/2016 09:05

I don't like it apart from one friend who has a sin who is always breaking /injuring himself playing sport. She does it but in an exasperated way.

Goldenhandshake · 25/04/2016 09:38

Yanbu, I can't stand it, especially when they check in at A&E.

MadHattersWineParty · 25/04/2016 15:04

I do have someone on facebook who will post a picture of a cannula in her arm or hand, just accompanied by a 'sad face' emoji.

Thing is those cannulas are never actually hooked up to anything Confused

She has been know to go to A&E with a hangover, though, and once when she thought she had an allergic reaction to a pair of tights because they made her skin itchy and hot to touch.
