To make my DS go to the St George's Day parade?

DS1 and DS2 have their St George's Day parade today for Cubs and Scouts. DS1 says he doesn't want to go because "it's boring and pointless." I have told him that it's part of being a Scout and that he should go. AIBU to make him go?

They are unable to make it to the usual Sunday morning church parades because of commitments at our own church. The leaders have been v.understanding.

I always (secretly) thought the parades were boring and pointless, but, when mine were cubs and scouts, we always attended them - no question.

It's only an hour or 2 out of their lives - a good life lesson to do things we are obliged to do.

I have read the other thread.. My DS is a cub and enjoyed it..

this is exactly why we stopped the DC going to Beavers. School is enough without all the extra nonsense of the scouting movement

Apologies EastMids - I didn't realise the Queen is mandatory for British subjects. A shame they don't allow a promise to the country as other citizens can make.

The site does indicate that members and parents should be aware of the promises they make and I do feel that if you join you should generally not cherry pick the bits that suit.

EastMidsMummy · 24/04/2016 22:28

So what are our "duties to the Queen"? What do kids understand by this?

ilovesooty · 24/04/2016 22:36

It seems that doesn't come into play until 8. Beavers don't have to make it. I presume that 8 and upwards cubs and their parents can discuss it.

Well done OP. I took DS1 to his first ever parade as a Beaver this morning.

I could have done with the service not being in a large, fairly exposed South London park in the rain though. It was bloody freezing! Still, it's character building, and DS1 enjoyed himself Grin

I tell my Cubs that duty to the queen is to keep the law of the land. That's all. It's just one line in a promise that, to me has far more important sentences, like do my best and help other people.

(and it's far older than 1950's)
