I work in a call centre, its not my weekend to work but a colleague text me to say all the computer systems had completely crashed. No work can be done without these systems, and they had been down for four hours when she text.

Staff were told they had to go home and make the time back on another day. For some people this would mean 7 hours!

To me this is not right, they were in work on time and its not their fault the systems crashed. While I understand you're supposed to be productive at work this was beyond the employees control.

Thankfully I wasn't in as I know I'd have struggled to keep mytrap shut!

Also when systems have been down, there is often something else that could be done which normally isn't a priority.

We lost power once years ago. We did what we could until lunchtime but it was becoming difficult to do much without being able to see (work in HE; some departments a little on the dark side) so they sent us home.

As there were no issues with electricity in the rest of the city I shopped.

There was no question about having to make up the time.

Once all internet connections were severed by on over zealous road crew in a field next to our building. This meant we had no connections and no access to systems needed. The supervisors started out by making a big issue of cleaning their desks in minute detail and 'encouraged' us to do the same. after an hour of this farce they agreed to us alternating fifteen minutes at our desks (doing bugger all) and fifteen minutes in the break room. Four hours later it was finally conceded that we wouldn't be working that day and were all 'asked' to go home. They asked because that way it was without pay. Those that chose to stay were just told to sit a their desks like some sort of torture (totally nothing else to do as all our work was reliant on systems from other sites of the company)
