Nervous about London tomorrow

Realitea · 23/04/2016 21:50

AIBU to be so nervous about getting the tube tomorrow? Will need to use it a lot throughout the day and I am making myself worse by reading the news online and the threats etc.
Dh is cross with me but he is from London and doesn't really think about it. I think the marathon being on heightens the danger. I feel very anxious about this Sad

I like to live dangerously chipped ...two flights of stairs here!

but hardly ever any lightning.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 23/04/2016 22:53

"3287 people die every day in cars"

??? Hmm

I thought it was about 4 or 5 per day in the UK. Are you quoting a global figure there?

Chippednailvarnish · 23/04/2016 22:56

Stay away from the windows Marmalade, someone might lob a used paper cup at you, which could cause a fatal paper cut to your jugular.

vulgarbunting · 23/04/2016 23:02

I do think that you are being a bit ridiculous. We live in an incredibly safe country. I ran the Paris marathon a few weeks ago with no thought about terrorism. I live in London and travel through the centre on the tube on a daily basis. You cannot spend your life wondering about 'what if'.

NoDramaForThisLlama · 23/04/2016 23:03

Concerend about what? I was in London today and it didn't even cross my mind to be concerned about anything?

sparechange · 23/04/2016 23:03

I take the tube several times a day, and the biggest risk is from high blood pressure when other people disregard the 'let passengers off before boarding' or 'stand on the the right of the escalator'

You'll be fine...

I also ran the marathon a few weeks after the Boston bombing, when people were calling it for it to be cancelled.

Security was heightened, but in London, security has been heightened for decades. Don't leave holdalls on the tube, but don't forget it is a city of 7 million people who all get around daily

Marmalade85 · 23/04/2016 23:09

Chippednail oh I do hope so, would the whole event much more interesting

BillSykesDog · 23/04/2016 23:19

London is really, really safe. We're probably the safest country in Europe at the moment. Our security services are shit hot because they are used to dealing with this stuff with the IRA and apparently the reason there are no attacks is because they are stopping them all. Apparently the terrorists have all but given up trying to attack London because the plots all fail.

I am v security conscious and am avoiding Europe at the moment and no way would I go to Turkey or North Africa. However I have a lot of confidence in security here and feel safe in London.

Having said that I'm not mad keen on the tube because I'm claustrophobic. Have you thought about taking the bus instead? Bus services are brilliant in London.

Chippednailvarnish · 23/04/2016 23:24

and watch out for those pesky big shiny foil blankets marmalade someone could leave one where you can't see it and one trip and a twisted ankle right there.

RaeSkywalker · 23/04/2016 23:35

Realitea I feel for you- fear isn't rational. I would try and focus on the fact that security will be tight.

Are you running? I watched my DH do the marathon 5 years ago and it was a lovely day. The tube was obviously rammed but it was very well organised. There were police everywhere as well.

lamiashiro · 23/04/2016 23:40

TBH, I'm not very sympathetic towards people who scaremonger about visiting London. I live in London, I work here, and travel here every day.

The worst thing that most visitors are likely to encounter is delays on the tube or a badly trained person being a bit odd in a public place or that MN horror - someone who is rude.

Titsywoo · 23/04/2016 23:43

I'm in London tomorrow with DH and both my kids. I'm not concerned and I'll be standing at the finish line waving at my Dad so probably one of the most likely place for an attack (similar to Boston). Security will be high with Obama here and the marathon. Try not to worry.

IDontSayBlahBlahBlah · 23/04/2016 23:50

Yes. I didn't want to say it, but I will, because people like this piss me off. They're the type Donald Trump and the Daily Fail target. Weak minded and completely irrational people who'll believe whatever they're told no questions asked. If you're in fear from visiting a city because of what might happen, then perhaps remain in your hobbit hole and don't ever come out.

Marmalade85 · 23/04/2016 23:51

Chippednail praying I don't accidentally decapitate myself on a railing

chickenowner · 23/04/2016 23:55

PS I lived in London about 15 years ago, and was in a pub in central London on marathon day. It was so much fun, people in costumes etc. Don't let fear created by people who fear us and our freedoms stop you! Especially as they particularly fear the freedom of western women!

(Feminist rant over) ;-)

BigGreenOlives · 23/04/2016 23:58

Why are you going on the tube tomorrow if you are worried? Why don't you just stay at home and watch the marathon on tv? My children catch the tube to school everyday, I use the tube 4 or 5 days a week, we just get on with it.

Londoners didn't give up when London was being bombed in WW2, during the IRA bombing campaigns or after 7/7. We aren't going to stop living our lives now. Hundreds of thousands of people from around the world have come to live in London because it is a wonderful vibrant place to live with great public transport, celebrate having it on your doorstep and enjoy it.

GreenMarkerPen · 24/04/2016 00:02

I take the tube every day. have to because of work.
try not to worry. be sensible, know where the exits/emergency exits are. have shoes with which you can wslk well (often it's quickef to walk between 2stations anyway)
enjoy!

FelicityR313 · 24/04/2016 00:03

You'll be more concerned with either fitting into a tube or getting a seat to be concerned about anything else in my experience.

VashtaNerada · 24/04/2016 00:11

Well, I think you know YABU - it's clearly an irrational fear as there's loads of us who go into central London every day and don't give it a second thought. And as others have said, you're at greater risk every time you get in a car. But you're clearly anxious and I don't think it's appropriate to be unkind.
The way I deal with irrational fears like that is to tell myself there could be a disaster at home and in fact London might be the safest place to be!

MissRabbitHasTooManyJobs · 24/04/2016 00:27

My 13 yr old son has just got back from wembley with his dad after watching Everton v Man United.
They travelled by train.
Ds has aspergers and is a worrier but I had no concerns over his safety going to London ( his first time )
We cannot live in fear.
We go on holiday in 4 weeks to turkey, sick of being told it's not safe, nearly booked costa del sol and according to news this week it's a terrorist hot spot along with Majorca. Nowhere is 100% safe and never has been.
My ds had a wonderful time despite us getting beatGrin

BeALert · 24/04/2016 00:45

TBH, I'm not very sympathetic towards people who scaremonger about visiting London.

Yes - I live in the US, and a friend asked a while ago if I thought she should cancel her daughter's trip to Italy in case she gets bombed. We live right near Boston FFS.

saltlakecity · 24/04/2016 06:34

I'm bring pretty blunt here but I'm tired of hearing about and having to deal with these kind of overly anxious people. Why live life like this. Seak help to lessen your anxiety. Take action and do something about it. If you don't it's likely to rub off on your children, children's children and so on.

There are around 60 billion people worldwide. Is it honestly going to be you today who gets caught up in terrorism? Yes terrorism happens but it happens rarely. Yes it happens but there are millions in london today. Is it going to be you if in the tiny, tiny chance there even happens to be an issue there today? Fgs, go and enjoy the day and control the anxiety or seek help for it.

lonerboner · 24/04/2016 07:00

Totally the above - it's London, a city.

MrsMook · 24/04/2016 07:05

Before performing a neck manouver yesterday, my osteopath warned me of a minisucle risk of stroke being triggered. I pointed out that I'd just crossed a major A road.

It's called terrorism because the bastards want to create terror. Death, carnage and destruction are the method, but what they really want is to feel powerful because they have disrupted our lifestyle that they hate and want you to be scared of them.
Don't give them the satisfaction.

Capricorn76 · 24/04/2016 07:08

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is finally fed up of these posts from people scared to visit London because of terrorism.
