To be disappointed that MNHQ have not given us a red rose emote for St Geoge's Day

We had a shamrock for St Patrick's, how come no rose for St George?

Whatever, I wish everyone in England a Happy St George's Day!

Typical of tiresome lefties. Not surprised

ghostyslovesheep · 23/04/2016 14:12

we have had a day of celebrations here including a medieval fair, jousting and a huge dragon puppet !

happy Syrian Dragon Murderer day everyone

TiggyD · 23/04/2016 14:21

And now dragons are extinct. Sad

FrancesNiadova · 23/04/2016 14:54

I agree op. We had a shamrock for St Patrick & a daffodil for St David. Where's the red rose of England, & where was the thistle for Scotland on St Andrew's Day, for that matter?

GabiSolis · 23/04/2016 15:05

I can't remember if the dragon was for England or Wales, but agree with you OP. If we have the flowers of the other countries, the red rose should certainly be there for England.

GoringBit · 23/04/2016 17:24

I thought the dragon was for Chinese New Year. Blush

kelda · 23/04/2016 17:26

I thought the dragon was for the new series of Game of Thrones. Multi use!

FrancesNiadova · 23/04/2016 20:45

I'm going to report this thread in the hope that Mumsnet Towers see it & understand how we all feel.

FrancesNiadova · 23/04/2016 20:51

I've reported the thread to ask, "Where is the red rose of St George?"
Can I suggest that you all do the same, to raise the issue with MNHQ.

Kidnapped · 23/04/2016 20:51

I honestly did not know that the red rose was associated with St. George. And I am not young.

I'd say red roses are associated more with Lancashire and the Labour Party.

IonaMumsnet · 23/04/2016 21:09

Hello folks! Probably a bit late now for a red rose (Tech take their crayons home every weekend for sharpening). But we'll have a discussion about it. In the meantime, we've popped the dragon into the list so he's a bit more obvious. Hope that helps. Cry God for Harry, England and St George etc.
Wine in place of a flagon of ale for you all.

I don't recall there being any sort of icon on St David's day either.

St Patrick's day gets the fuss because as others say, it's an excuse to get pissed and none of the other saints days are.

kelda · 23/04/2016 21:16

There was a yellow daffodil for St David.

vindscreenviper · 23/04/2016 21:17

I'm more disappointed that MN have put a photograph of a dead toddler on my twitter feed.

please remove it mnhq

IonaMumsnet · 23/04/2016 21:51

Hi there Vindscreenviper. Thanks so much for flagging this with us. This picture went up in error. Many apologies to anyone who was upset by the image. We've now removed it.

vindscreenviper · 23/04/2016 21:55

Many thanks Iona, I was ready to unfollow

WordGetsAround · 23/04/2016 21:59

It shouldn't need this thread for HQ to think of doing something for SGD - you thought of the daffodils all by yourselves! Poor show.

Alisvolatpropiis · 23/04/2016 22:01

I stand corrected re St David's day!

I do think there is some sort of national identity crisis going on in England. The flag, almost the whole concept of being patriotic has been co opted in the public eye by raving right wing racists which seems to have left people feeling unable to show pride in their country for fear of being seen as a racist.

If someone flies a Welsh/Scottish flag it's fine. If someone out the St Georges cross outside their house, people would not take it quite so well. It is a real shame.

Dragon
Vaara · 23/04/2016 22:16

St. George isn't widely celebrated because historically the Protestants in England didn't really go in for celebrating any saints days - it's a catholic thing so they dissociated from it.

Nothing to do with Nationalism

AugustaFinkNottle · 23/04/2016 22:18

What's the fuss? We've got the dragon. That's a much more natural association with St George than a rose would be.

FrancesNiadova · 23/04/2016 22:19

Dragon y ddraig Cymru?

Vaara · 23/04/2016 22:21
