We had a shamrock for St Patrick's, how come no rose for St George?

I agree op. We had a shamrock for St Patrick & a daffodil for St David. Where's the red rose of England, & where was the thistle for Scotland on St Andrew's Day, for that matter?

I can't remember if the dragon was for England or Wales, but agree with you OP. If we have the flowers of the other countries, the red rose should certainly be there for England.

I thought the dragon was for Chinese New Year.

I thought the dragon was for the new series of Game of Thrones. Multi use!

Can I suggest that you all do the same, to raise the issue with MNHQ.

I honestly did not know that the red rose was associated with St. George. And I am not young.

I'd say red roses are associated more with Lancashire and the Labour Party.

Hello folks! Probably a bit late now for a red rose (Tech take their crayons home every weekend for sharpening). But we'll have a discussion about it. In the meantime, we've popped the dragon into the list so he's a bit more obvious. Hope that helps. Cry God for Harry, England and St George etc.

St Patrick's day gets the fuss because as others say, it's an excuse to get pissed and none of the other saints days are.

There was a yellow daffodil for St David.

It shouldn't need this thread for HQ to think of doing something for SGD - you thought of the daffodils all by yourselves! Poor show.

I stand corrected re St David's day!

I do think there is some sort of national identity crisis going on in England. The flag, almost the whole concept of being patriotic has been co opted in the public eye by raving right wing racists which seems to have left people feeling unable to show pride in their country for fear of being seen as a racist.

If someone flies a Welsh/Scottish flag it's fine. If someone out the St Georges cross outside their house, people would not take it quite so well. It is a real shame.

St. George isn't widely celebrated because historically the Protestants in England didn't really go in for celebrating any saints days - it's a catholic thing so they dissociated from it.

Nothing to do with Nationalism

What's the fuss? We've got the dragon. That's a much more natural association with St George than a rose would be.
