£25-£30 for What-a-mess the original?

Everyone must have their childhood favourite that they'd love to read to their children?

spankhurst I loved A Circling Star!

SharonSignsToCherryRed · 23/04/2016 11:01

Apparently it's being republished this year.

SingingSamosa · 23/04/2016 13:28

mathanxiety Could that possibly have been The Fox Cub Bold by Colin Dan? Part of the Animals of Farthing Wood series?
There's also another I read as a teen called Hunter's Moon (can't remember the author) about a vixen called O-ha and a dog fox called A-o. She wants to be a traditional fox and stay in the country. He wants to go and live in the town. I seem to recall an incident with a train in that?

tinyterrors · 23/04/2016 21:48

I loved Phoebe and the hot water bottles, my Nan used to read it to me. I'm going to have to go up to my dad's and see if my copy is still there.

My favourite that I read myself is Holiday at the Dew Drop Inn. The copy I had was originally my mum's from when she was little, hopefully it's in my dad's attic because the ones I've seen om eBay are too expensive for me right now.

ClaraLane · 23/04/2016 21:55

My mum has a couple of Ruth M Arthur books, Requiem for a Princess and The Autumn People and every time I'm in a second-hand bookshop I look for more for her, they're so expensive though!

I've got a wish list of books from my childhood on Amazon that I want to buy for any future children.

mathanxiety · 23/04/2016 22:15

SingingSamosa, sadly I was 19 when The Fox Cub Bold was published. It was actually reading that one to my DCs a few years later that stirred my memory of my own fox story. It was probably not Hunter's Moon either as it was definitely a young children's book, with more illustration than text. The quest continues....
But thank you very much for your suggestions.

I could buy my childhood book for a whole pence! Obviously not a classic in the way some of yours are #lowbrow 😂

SavoyCabbage · 23/04/2016 22:21

SingingSamosa the 'ant and bee' books have been republished in the last couple of years.

TwentyOneGuns · 23/04/2016 22:31

Wow that Oxfam site is fab! Old children's' books are one of my favourite things and I've found several on there to add to my collection :).

NewMinouMinou · 23/04/2016 22:41

I spent £35 on "In Search of Unicorns" a few years back.
I loved it as a nipper and constantly borrowed it from the library.

AllThePrettySeahorses · 23/04/2016 22:52

Titsalinabumsquash - a reprint copy of Chilly Billy is £3.72 on Amazon if that's any good? www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1908191694/sr=8-1/qid=1461448065/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=&qid=1461448065&sr=8-1

pratiaalba · 23/04/2016 22:56

I bought mine when I had DD- the Noggin the Nog books. The complete set was about £70 in a reprint edition, from the Dragon Friendly Society. I'm so glad I did, as ten years later, they've been read over and over again- we all love them (DH didn't know them as a child).

LauraMipsum · 23/04/2016 23:01

My desperately sought after childhood favourite (long out of print) was going for £90 - £110 on eBay.

I found a copy on abebooks.co.uk for under a tenner!

pratiaalba · 23/04/2016 23:01

I do wish I had the Jennings books though, as they made me chuckle so much.

NerrSnerr · 23/04/2016 23:02

This is mine. Loved this book, I must buy it again.

EBearhug · 23/04/2016 23:15

I shouldn't have read this thread. I'mean thinking, I'm only missing one Mary Plain book, and I loved the Chalet School and Jennings, too. And I've got an Ant and Bee book, which was Dad's when he was little.

I still have most of my childhood books.

BagelGoesWalking · 24/04/2016 00:43

I loved Masha and The Youngest Lady in Waiting when I was a teen. I used to borrow the beautiful, illustrated copies from the school library. I wish I'd kept them when I left the 6th form!

Similar copies go for approx £150 on ebay. I bought a re-issued paperback for £14 but it's not the same without the illustrations Sad

DiscoGlitter · 24/04/2016 00:49

I've never spent more than £10 on childhood favourite books.
As a huge reader, when I had children I was eager to add some childhood favourites to the bookcase.
I've bought -
The Tiger Who Came To Tea
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Funnybones
Mrs Pepperpot
Timbuctoo creatures by Roger Hargreaves

PaperdollCartoon · 24/04/2016 02:03

Thanks for the OP, made me go looking for mine. Turns out you can by The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes for about £2 hardback with the original illustrations (different coloured cover)
I've ordered it, my mums 1960s copy is about to fall apart, and I can't risk not having it to read to my own children one day.

PaperdollCartoon · 24/04/2016 02:03

buy

GinSolvesEverything · 24/04/2016 02:19

I've also still got my childhood copy of Phoebe and the hot water bottles.

It would NEVER get published these days - social services would go nuts over her being left at home alone constantly while her dad went out to work.

wanderings · 24/04/2016 07:29

Oh yes, and the fire service would have a fit about Phoebe's methods too, and children being given puppies as presents.

However it was one of the most beautiful books ever!

Ankleswingers · 24/04/2016 07:33

I paid £40 for mine. I was over the moon that I had found it TBH

TooMinty · 24/04/2016 07:39

I still have my copy of What A Mess in Winter - DS1 chose it for his bedtime story last night Smile
