It seems a very unpopular view amongst my friends and colleagues, and possibly amongst fellow mumsnetters, but I don't care. She's 90 and she's still out working hard with good humour.

God save the Queen and other unpopular platitudes

YANBU to have a gratuitous thread.

YANBU

I love the Queen and the (immediate) royal family.

CatWithKittens · 22/04/2016 10:36

I agree: God save the Queen. I would only ask the usual whingers which current President they would rather have as Head of State? Which of our current band of politicians, or any we have known during our lifetime, would the republicans on MN want to do it? Just think how we would feel if we had the risk that the USA faces of somebody like Trump getting the job here?
If any of us, young as we are, gave as much in both service and pleasure to the community as the Queen does at 90, and has done year in year out throughout her life, we might have a right to carp. She promised to serve her people and has kept that promise.

Charles is a menace. He does not accept his role, which is not surprising as it is pretty pointless. To his great credit the Princes Trust has benefitted a lot of young people. Whilst I admire the Queen's commitment to her role and the country, I think that the monarchy is an anachronism in this day and age. The Canadians and Australians manage very well without a monarchy, with a nod to ours occasionally but increasingly less and less. I suspect that when the Queen goes Australia will move on.
I disagree that the Royal family brings huge numbers of tourists to the UK. They come here for our history, and would continue to do so. So I am a Republican, and I suspect that the majority of the younger royals wish that they didn't have to live with the constraints of being Royal. They are an exceedingly wealthy family. Charles could retire and indulge his charitable tendencies. William et al could do what they want. Vive la republic!

Erm, Cat we could just have exactly what we have now minus a subsidised family who don't actually have any say anyway? We've already got a godawful government - we have in the past and I'm sure we will again. If someone like Trump got into power, how exactly do you see the Queen mitigating that problem.

In return, I have a question for the 'usual' sycophantic grovellers - what would be your examples of the Queen 'serving' us? Of what does this 'service' consist?

She did indeed promise to live in lots of castles at our expense, and she has indeed done just that - but then, some promises aren't that hard to keep, are they?

Lifecanonlygetbetter · 22/04/2016 10:50

Crossed with Catwithkittens. Surely a civilised society in the 21st century can come up with a democratic system that includes a two tier system of government that is not based on inherited wealth and influence ( and I include the current House of Lords set- up in this). The US president is more akin to our PM, there are alternatives, such as a non political head of state who changes every 4 years, and can be removed from office. They could elected on ability, not who their mum and dad are.

t4gnut · 22/04/2016 10:56

Why do we need a president?

We have elected officials and ambassadors etc. to represent the country. Wheeling out a bunch of parasitic inbred geriatrics and claiming they benefit the country is nonsense.

mimishimmi · 22/04/2016 10:58

Personally I like the Queen and she has worked hard to do the best she can and I like the young royals but I think, as an institution, there's an incredible amount of corruption involved sadly...
