can't wear tights more than once and they rip!

now that its time to get out of opaque black tights, i need to ask you if you manage to wear 15 denier tights multiple times? not sure if its just me but as soon as i put them on they rip. i bought some £8 aristoc ones last week, felt really nice, followed the 'instructions on how to put them on' (!) but by the end of the day they were laddered and had to be chucked out. waste of money. i don't have long nails or rings. am i being incompetent or are the tights made to rip??

Other hacks I've heard of:

Put them on inside out.
Spray them with hairspray once you're wearing them (less likely to catch on stuff).
Wear gloves Hmm to put them on.
Move up your legs a bit at a time, so both ankles, then knees, then up. Avoids straining.

One from me: give them a good stretch when they come to knee level.

I get through at least a pair a week but go for the cheap ones. In some ways it could be seen as sex descrimination. A guy doing my job doesn't have to spend a fiver a week on socks!
The Italian brand Golden Lady are about the best I've found for stretchiness (can't stand the sheer ones that grate together as you walk).

Since mine usually rip between the legs I'm seriously considering stockings (oooer, hope we're not being watched by pervy tights trolls!).

The other thing that helps if you're at work/out and you have a tiny hole somewhere unoticeable is to cover the hole in nail varnish, it stops it ripping any further.

The summer ones without toes from M&S last for ages, but they are the only ones I can manage with. most get ladders in them just putting them on. I've bought some M&S very fine nude fishnets as an experiment for the spring, hoping they might work better as transition leg wear.

I wear nude tights year round and have since I was a girl. Here are some things I've learned over the years. Price means nothing so buy the cheap ones. Check the back of the package and compare the heights as well as the hip/weight measurement. I'm not thin but my legs are short for my height so I wear s/m or m tights. That said, you'll have to try various brands to find the one with the best leg length for you. For several years I wore John Lewis brand but something changed and the s/m leg was not quite long enough for me. For a few years now I have been wearing Sainsbury's cheapest. They last as well as any brand I have worn over the years and are v. inexpensive so if a pair gives out, I don't feel as bad. I wash mine by hand and usually wear any give pair many times.

Lol at the idea of pervy tight trolls :) they can keep their hairy hands to themselves...

I've worn hold ups before, slightly more success but the damm things never stay stuck, once had them round my ankles which I hadn't quite noticed :)

I struggle finding ones long enough, am a fairly curvy 6ft :) so have to buy much bigger size anyway for the length or I get an attractive muffin top - yuck

I agree with buying bigger, I wear XL even when I'm size 10. They are just comfier, come up higher and more material to grab when pulling them up!

Hero1callylost · 21/04/2016 21:02

Buying bigger is no good for short people like me, I end up with baggy ankles or extra nylon gathering round my toes!

I tend to pull them on through my dress - so no gloves on, but same effect.

Terramirabilis · 21/04/2016 23:29

Agree with one size larger than packaging says you need. Also Falke are great. I have some thicker opaque tights that are genuinely almost 10 years old from them and still look great. Even the 15 denier type seem to be more long-lasting. Shame they are even more expensive than usual here!

notagiraffe · 22/04/2016 07:41

Sacredness is right. Cheap tights are the only way to go. Five packs of cheap support tights from Primark or M&S. Also, accidentally buying them in a colour you hate helps. They last for ages then, however often you wear them.

notagiraffe · 22/04/2016 07:43

Sacredness? That was a mad auto correct, meant scarednoob

JessieMcJessie · 22/04/2016 07:50

helentitchener Snap! my Mum did the same and said that "the bonus is that the double gusset helps keep your tummy in Grin. (She also loved The Archers).

SeaRabbit · 22/04/2016 08:15

My Wolfords lasted no longer than M&S, but are a far nicer colour. I currently buy Charnos Simply Bare 7 denier tights in: nude, and they last very well and are a good colour. I am 5,4" size 8 but wear Medium. Tights manufacturers clearly haven't woken up to size slippage.

jillwright · 22/04/2016 08:35

Try Primark or M&S for your tights. They have a much better variety and quality tights.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 22/04/2016 08:54

I love M&S lace hold-ups, I wear them every day as I hate struggling with tights. Hold-ups last forever and you can do that nifty change of one leg if you do manage to ladder them.

Does anyone else do 'The Tight Dance' trying to get the feckers on? Hmm

Twinklestar2 · 22/04/2016 12:26

This thread is so timely! I want to get out of the opaques but cant afford new tights every day.

Do love nude tights but hate shiny! Any recommendations?

TobleroneBoo · 22/04/2016 13:13

I only wear primark ones (granted a high denier) but have never once had a ladder, they do wear at the crotch eventually though
