First of all I know this is 'get a grip' time but for me it's a really big deal so please try to be kind! For the first time in our married life (10 yrs) DP and I are able to buy something new, rather than 2nd hand. We've had a family inheritance and have decided to replace our at least 3rd hand knackered 3 and 2 seat sofas with some of the spendygrippers. We'll never be in a position to buy such a luxury item again and so I've become obsessed with frame quality and lifetime guarantees. I am driving myself mad never mind my poor DP! I want to be able to just fall in love with a sofa but I am finding myself scrutinizing tech specs for hardwood frames and tied sprung bases FFS! Please help me! Where can I buy a sofa that will last foreveeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Need Wine

Oh, just noticed that now they are offering only a 5 years guarantee. Hope it does not mean the sofa is going to fall apart in a few years! But so far going strong despite kids constantly jumping on it.

GinAndColonic · 20/04/2016 17:06

I hated this!! YANBU!

Our sofa is 3 years old with kids - from M&S it's lovely and STAIN FREE

I've got a sofa on order from Loaf and am beside myself with excitement. I should have it within a few weeks!

I wouldn't get removable covers - they make it look a bit loose and saggy.

I have bought guardsman protection though which basically insures it against most things for five years.

You could spend less than £4K at loaf on two sofas

52dietname · 20/04/2016 17:11

I forgot the most important bit - buy what you LOVE.

HappyFatty · 20/04/2016 18:01

Thanks all. Not looked at Multi York there's one not too far from us. I will defo buy something I love in the end. Though I may have a cow if the dog goes near it lol

I spent 5 years looking for sofas for my lounge after we moved. DH reckons I'm too fussy Grin

I almost went with Multiyork - they seemed to have the most comfortable sofas around with the best construction but you need to wait until they have a sale on with an extra discount as you can then get them for about half price instead of paying full price.

Dsis had m&s sofas that stayed very hard and rubbery despite being told that they would soften.

My previous sofa I had made by a local upholstery company that made them - 20 years on it still looks pretty much as good as new. However the back cushions were feather and foam and the feathers are now beginning to get a bit dusty and probably in need of new pads! Unfortunately they no longer made sofas when I needed them again after moving (into a bigger place, hence need for more sofas!). So definitely investigate any local places rather than think you have to go for big names as they can make some excellent stuff and will often be able to tweak it to be just right for you.

However, I ended up with some John Lewis ones from ebay that were a year old and cost me £200 instead of £3000 - I originally bought them because we were having loads of visitors over Christmas so needed more seating and thought that I would resell them when I bought the 'real' sofas rather than have guests sitting on garden furniture again. They were in such good condition and matched my room so well that I ended up keeping them and saving my money.

So I'd say that if you do know what you want - or the brands you are interested in, it's worth having a look on ebay as there are some amazing bargains to be had. And additionally places like multiyork have some shops that have overstocks and returned orders that they sell off cheaply that if they have something you want can work in your favour. I once bought a sofa for my bedroom from furniture village - just before ds2 was born, thought it would be nice to have a sofa to sit and feed him on and escape when necessary. As I was heavily pregnant and they didn't have a leaflet for the sofa, the person in the shop measured it for me. It was really tight to my measurements for the door it had to get through but they assured me that their measurement was the absolute maximum... and of course when it turned up it was 3 cm bigger and didn't fit, even when I took some of the doorframe off. So it went back to the depot to be sold as a return (thank goodness the manager had measured it as otherwise I would have been stuck with it!).

Also there are places like Trade Secrets that sell overstocks and returns from people like M&S, Debenhams, John Lewis and lots more. Either just go and have a wander and see what they have in stock then you can take it away with you or get them to deliver it sharpish. Or they will sometimes run a list of things that people are interested in because it's in their interest to, if they know that somebody is looking for a JL grey 'Marlborough' 3 seater or whatever, they can nab it. If you do go to one of their showrooms, it's a great place to try lots more sofas than most places because all the different brands are in one place so you can compare a John Lewis sofa directly with a Debenhams one and so on. Downside is that htey don't always have everything in, but you can ring and ask if you're interested in something in particular. And best of all, prices usually start at 50% off the list price (or they did when I last went, about 5 years ago).

Good luck on your sofa hunt!

Not sure how popular these are nowadays but they certainly last! Bought mine in 1984 and in 2006, I swapped it for something modern as I was so sick of it - still was in good condition though. It was made by a company called Cintique. Also Ercol and Stressless are very good and long lasting - they are expensive for a reason.

Titsywoo · 22/04/2016 14:26

Look at Barker and Stonehouse. Great quality. Next is very good too. M&S are crap. I have 3 and they are starting to look bad after 3 months!

GoodGirlGoneWrong · 22/04/2016 14:35

Next are rubbish!! Ours is in need of replacing lasted less than 5 years.....(awaiting house move first) then will really splash out

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 22/04/2016 14:56

I got the most beautiful three-seater with removable covers for convenient laundering from Sofa Workshop on ebay for a hundred quid. With feather-filled seat-cushions, so it's really REALLY comfy. It's heavy! And had to be hefted up three flights of stairs. After five years it's still in absolutely perfect condition. I firmly believe it will outlast me.

You really, really need to test them. The one I have is very deep, I've found that some are rather narrow so wouldn't suit me at all as I'm quite tall and like to lounge rather than sit. If I could afford to buy new I'd definitely give Sofa Workshop a look-see.

lljkk · 22/04/2016 15:05

Getting het up over sofa purchase is not unrealistic if brand new; surprised you didn't have to mortgage the house to afford one, tbh.

Lesley1980 · 14/07/2016 00:20

Hate my M & S sofa. Terrible customer service. Apparently despite costing £3000 you can't expect a sofa to last more than 3 years. My brother has a 14 year old M &S sofa that looks great but I think the new ones are poorly made, bad filling & cheap material. I wish I'd bought a cheap Sofa from DFS & then I wouldn't be so annoyed at replacing it after 3 years. I'm glad someone said the same company makes John Lewis sofas as I was considering one of theirs & I'll now avoid.

seventhgonickname · 14/07/2016 00:44

I had my multiyork sofa delivered last week,3 weeks earlier than expected.I loved that you can choose the configuration the we sat on loads of sofas to decide what sort of cushions we wanted for sitting on and the back cushions
The fabric choice is fantastic too.No rush ,no pushy sales talk. There are often sales on bank holidays. We got staying used which gives you 5 year no quibble protection on the fabric, the frame has a 10 year guarantee .Would second the idea of the paper cutout for sizing.
Happy hunting.
