AIBU to still have the heating on?

I mean not all the time. Just an hour in the morning and at night to take the chill off the air. I actually think the planet is being VVU for being cold. But am I just being a wimp? Does anyone else still have their heating on??

No thermostats here. The only way i know any exact temps is on the baby monitor. DD4s room hovers around 19/20 degrees with an oil filled radiator on low.

Since living in this house i've got very good at judging the temp. It drops away like a stone once the sun goes down.

If it's sunny in the morning, once it gets onto the glass at the back of the house the temp shoots up downstairs and i can turn off the heater. I'd never live in a house without central heating again! You don't appreciate it till you haven't got it.

My DM seems to see being cold indoors as a badge of honor Hmm I'll never forget the Boxing Day DH and i (he was fairly new DP then) sat shivering at her house with my sinus' thumping trying to keep a scarf round my face while we ate lunch! We had to rush back to the only room she was keeping above about 15 degrees and keep the door shut! She's got pots of cash, it's not a money thing. Embarrassing and miserable! (she comes to us at xmas every year now)

KayTee87 · 19/04/2016 07:50

Had it on last night for a couple of hours and have been sleeping with 2 quilts on - think it was 2 or 3 degrees last night.

Spudlet · 19/04/2016 07:51

I lit a fire yesterday, it was that chilly!

peggyundercrackers · 19/04/2016 07:52

We haven't head ours on for about 2 weeks now, we haven't had any frost or snow though here in Scotland. Neither of us think it's that cold...

EponasWildDaughter · 19/04/2016 07:54

Northants/Warwickshire border here - we've woken to 2 heavy frosts in the last few days. Mad.

EponasWildDaughter · 19/04/2016 07:55

Oh and a snow fluffy at the weekend! Grin (nothing settled)

EponasWildDaughter · 19/04/2016 07:55

fluffy? flurry.

whois · 19/04/2016 07:56

Threads like this make mead to live in a flat! Not needed the heating on for ages.

Junosmum · 19/04/2016 07:57

It's currently 16℃ in my house so I'm about to turn the heating on.

ssd · 19/04/2016 07:59

I also have a timer on my heating but not a clear thermostat, how do you get a thermostat without spending loads ?

KayTee87 · 19/04/2016 08:06

peggy I'm in Scotland and there was sleet/hailstones on Saturday and one day last week. Doesn't feel cold in the sun though I agree, just at night.

EponasWildDaughter · 19/04/2016 08:13

whois - ''Threads like this make mead to live in a flat! Not needed the heating on for ages.''

We're renting this bloody great ice box of a place. Hoping to try and buy sometime soon and it'll likely be a massive downsize to a tiny house ... and i honestly can't bloody wait! Grin Central heating and small rooms - mmmmmmmmm.

Trills · 19/04/2016 08:15

My heating is on a thermostat and timer. A bit like this.

I don't use a big OFF switch and declare it "No-heating season".

If it were cold in the morning, it would come on.

chelle792 · 19/04/2016 08:19

My heating is still on. It's broken and won't turn off. A constant low heat upstairs. Downstairs radiators won't turn on. Bizarre. Really need it fixed but a whole new system is so expensive Sad

LittleLionMansMummy · 19/04/2016 08:22

Ours is still on. I work from home too but have just begun to look at other ways of warming through house. Our conservatory backs onto our lounge. If it's sunny I open the conservatory doors and it tends to warm the downstairs quite nicely. I hate being cold.

HeadDreamer · 19/04/2016 08:26

Ours is still on. It's on a thermostat. And it comes on during the day even. It's so cold still.

MeMySonAndl · 19/04/2016 08:27

Mine is on a thermostat and turns on every time the temperature goes down below what is specified, be it winter or a cold day in the middle of the summer.

I don't understand people that keep the central heating off because it's not winter, especially when they, and most particularly their children, are feeling very cold.

I understand the tradition of turning it off during the warmer months may have come from the fact that solid fuel deliveries were reduced during the "warm" season, but FGS gas/electricity are always available nowadays.

I had a boyfriend who only turned the central heating on when I was visiting, his ex wife was in a £50,000+ salary (as was her partner) but you could often find the whole family under a duvet in the living room because she refused point blank to use the central heating between March and October. I still don't know whether this was misplaced tightness or an extreme form of tradition keeping. It was so grim.

peggyundercrackers · 19/04/2016 08:41

Kaytee87 nope we haven't had hailstones or sleet but we are next to the water and when other areas have it bad we don't seem to be affected the same way.

ephemeralfairy · 19/04/2016 08:54

I'm in Scotland, in a big high-ceilinged flat with no double glazing. Damn right the heating is still on!! Last night I had to sit under a blanket on the sofa to get properly warm.

hefzi · 19/04/2016 08:56

I haven't had mine on at all over this winter - but I am well 'ard (and live in a terrace): but if you can afford it, and are chilly, why not?

seasidesally · 19/04/2016 10:15

mine is on now and has been since 6am,im in the south to

no way will i be cold

CwtchMeQuick · 19/04/2016 10:32

Mine is rarely off. My mom used to turn the heating off March-November and my god I hated it. I feel the cold quite badly so the thermostat is set to 20 degrees morning and evening, 18 during the day, and 16 overnight. So far I think it's been on for about an hour this morning and will probably come back on around 5pm so it's warm for when DS has his bath. Don't see the point in being unnecessarily cold
