...to think "shall I put the kettle on?" = "I will make you a cuppa"?

Lighthearted!

DH offered 30 mins ago to put the kettle on. No tea appeared. He thinks this is perfectly acceptable and in no way does "shall I put the kettle on?" mean "I will make you a cuppa". I am furious, tealess and mouth agape (and parched).

LTB?

Tell him to read some Paul Grice.

i'd start asking about buying a new kettle, cos this one is OBVIOUSLY broken.

Sparrowlegs248 · 18/04/2016 21:57

Did he actually switch the kettle on?

leelu66 · 18/04/2016 21:59

Oh you have to do it back to him, for things he likes.

GreenBaizePacker · 18/04/2016 22:01

I think the kettle went on the first time.

When I reminded him he went and put it on again. It clicked off about 10 mins ago. He's still in the kitchen. Will there be tea forthcoming?

Could you, tomorrow, say you are putting the tea on. And Then just make youraelf a sandwich. And make no tea whatsoever.

NeedACleverNN · 18/04/2016 22:04

If someone said put the kettle on it means will you make me a cuppa.

If they shall i put the kettle on it means would you like a cuppa?

Yanbu!

Tea as in main evening meal.

GreenBaizePacker · 18/04/2016 22:06

DH is going to the football tomorrow night. I might offer him a lift then get into a deep bubble bath and lock the door.

Just heard him go upstairs and get in the shower. Visited kitchen. Kettle has boiled. Mug is out. Teabag is in mug. NO WATER IN MUG.

Yes, it is an offer to make a cuppa. Why else would you bother putting the kettle on?

Ceic · 19/04/2016 00:32

My DH often offers to put the kettle on and puts out two mugs but often forgets to add teabags. My other bugbear is that he doesn't pour the boiling water out promptly. As we like strong tea, I get my revenge by making colder tea when I make it. Between us though, we usually do get it right.
