To wish I could shop at Sainsburys

I know this is ridiculous but I bloody love Sainsbos. I do most of my shopping at Lidl/local market because it's cheap and convenient but every now and then I go to the big Sainsburys for 'a few bits' and spend a bloody fortune marvel at the choice and variety and lovely things they have. I know I'm a sad act and that I'm lucky I can afford food, but it pisses me off that I'm always having to watch the pennies when other people can go there and pile their trollies high without thinking about it.

I can afford Sainsburys and do agree its nice but keep going back to Aldi for the value, quality and how quickly you can do a shop (especially important now I have DS who is 3 weeks old).

tappitytaptap · 19/04/2016 08:30

Agree with YoJesse the kids clothes are great. DS has some lovely things from there.

Chelsea26 · 19/04/2016 08:40

I'm boycotting sainsburys at the moment as they have tried to stop a big development near where we live (cinema, restaurants rtc) as there is going to be an asda there. They held it up for years and I stopped using them in protest - drive further to a tescos instead. Can't wait for the big asda to open and we're getting a Lidl too. I'll be saving money in no time now!

PestilentialCat · 19/04/2016 08:41

Sainsbury's isn't convenient for me, though I sometimes use their car park if I'm in town & do a little shop to get the parking for free Grin

I've been using Aldi a fair bit lately & save about 15-20% compared to Tesco. Now I get the rage if I'm shopping in Tesco for convenience, & mentally comparing prices to Aldi. Aldi doesn't have everything I want sometimes, which can be a mild pain.

Nearest Waitrose in an hour away Sad

LunaLoveg00d · 19/04/2016 08:48

Hate Sainsbury's. I think it's pricey for what you get - don't mind paying Waitrose prices as their quality is so good, but I just don't think Sainsburys offers the same value. I don't rate their own brand and the whole shopping environment feels old fashioned. Their kids clothes range is OK, will pop in if they're having 20% off. Don't think I've ever found anything in there I liked for myself.

I am not a loyal shopper - I will shop between Asda, Tesco, Waitrose, Coop and Lidl.

Wdigin2this · 19/04/2016 08:56

I shop at ASDA.....I know my place! Wink

mrsmortis · 19/04/2016 09:14

I'm another one who splits the weekly shop between Aldi and Waitrose.

I find that Waitrose is brilliant for yellow stickers. If I have some spare budget I buy and freeze stuff that's reduced. The only time I've bought lamb recently it's had a yellow sticker. I got half a leg for under half price in Feb and I froze it as a special treat for Easter Sunday.

wheelofapps · 19/04/2016 09:28

I use our local Aldi which is very good for basics. Meat, fish, fruit / veg / deli.
I cook mostly from scratch so it's fine.

With the money I save I can pay mortgage and bills.
If there is any spare (rarely!) I get nice kids clothing from Sainsbury's (only supermarket clothes which don't shrink 1st wash with me).

Am lusting after one of their flat cream casserole dishes (about £45).

flirtygirl · 19/04/2016 12:24

I shop sainsburys for offers as i do with waitrose tesco and morrisons. I use the mysupermarket website to check wheres cheaper, i buy fruit and veg from lidls and fresh bread to freeze weekly, farmfoods and iceland monthly,

Ill spend more one week to stock up on offers but ave 200-240 each month, family of four with a 16 yr old, all lunches at home also or snacks to take out included. This amount includes cleaning stuff wet wipes toilet tissue and bodywash. I spend about an extra 250 per year on hair stuff, makeup, korean beauty products etc from ebay, amazon, avon, savers, poundshop and wilkinsons. Allow us a holiday on our low income life style and nice clothes etc.

flirtygirl · 19/04/2016 12:26

Some weeks ill spend nothing and use up frozen things or store cupboard stuff and buy myself a nice handbag.

gruffaloshmuffalo · 19/04/2016 13:14

We mainly do Asda, Aldi, and co-op. The co-op is the closest so we go there a lot. The food is lovely! I couldn't do a full shop there though, but it's not terribly expensive

OhSoggyBiscuit · 19/04/2016 15:39

I like Sainsburys! Their free from stuff is better then Tesco for dairy free stuff and the food is pretty good. Not a whole lot more expensive. I wish our Lidl was closer or I would totally shop in there more.

flirtygirl · 19/04/2016 15:49

Just realised i posted on the wrong thread, Blush i was reading this one and the husband spending £220 per week on shopping, oh well

Clawdy · 19/04/2016 15:58

President soft butter. I stock up every visit which isn't often as it's miles away. Also individually wrapped croissants, and Matzo tea biscuits which our local Tesco and Aldi don't stock.

BabyGanoush · 19/04/2016 20:56

President Spreadable is the best butter ever

Nothing comes close

Clawdy · 19/04/2016 21:15

BabyGanoush you are so right.Smile

sunnyspot · 19/04/2016 22:05

Co op shopper here. I don t find it expensive and much prefer smaller shops. It s more personal , and if you have a Co-op card you get great money off vouchers.

HanYOLO · 20/04/2016 10:52

Our nearest shop is Co-op - it is extortionate compared to everywhere else!

Designjunkie · 20/04/2016 18:50

I swear it's all perception though. If I'm invited out for dinner I couldn't tell you if the host had shopped at Aldi, Sainsbury's or Waitrose - well maybe you can tell with meat but the rest not so much.
Not a boast at all but just wanted to share because it is kind of funny in a sad way that where I live the locals mostly shop at 'local' shops or Abel & Cole or Wholefoods basically shops that grow food locally or ethically or as close to London as possible and many actively ignore the local Waitrose as it is a chain. The intention is a good one to support local businesses but the prices are eye watering. We are never satisfied.

EssentialHummus · 20/04/2016 18:57

design - when I'm feeding brand-snob DP or guests I love serving Aldi/Lidl food and getting compliments on how good it is. No-one can tell. This past weekend I laid on lunch for 6 with drinks for £40 and guests were raving about the Aldi steak and wine. I genuinely get a kick out of it .

Jujuheyhey · 20/04/2016 21:58

It's the cheese that does me in. Sainsburys sell my favourite cheese (taleggio) and loads of others I adore. M&S too. Although to be fair I had a Cornish Camembert from lidl that was as nice as they come

I hate doing a whole shop at Sainsbury's - takes ages and I get a headache from having to work out which pasta sauce I really want.

I go to Aldi for my big shop, and then Sainsbury's for the bits I can't get in Aldi.

I had a wander around Sainsbury's this evening with a basket, and had a nice time, but wouldn't want to do a whole shop.

I do sulk a bit that I can't afford cheese from the specialist cheese shop near my house. I only go about twice a year, and wander home swining a paper bag full of lovely cheese, far more excited than I should be about a bag of cheese. Grin

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 20/04/2016 22:24

Co-OP is the most expensive Ive found. Any offers change things to normal price.

Ive tried Aldi, but Id end up spending £70 in there then popping to Tesco or Sainsbury and spending another £70 in there. So we decided it was far better to spend £120 in either Tesco or Sainsbury (me, DH, 3DCs a cat and a dog)
Also the choice is very limited in Aldi. Im envious of people who can do a full weekly shop there.

Helloitsme88 · 20/04/2016 22:28

Love lidl. Not huge fan of Aldo. We could just about afford to buy our food from sainsburys but I would just see it as a massive waste that could be spent else where. I do like their clothing range though

Helloitsme88 · 20/04/2016 22:29

Aldi
