Neighbour's effing security light 😡

Neighbour whose house backs onto our back garden has put up a security light.
The problem being is that it's about ten million watts and shines directly into our windows including bedrooms.
It seems to be on a sensor but the sensor obviously goes off if an owl farts three streets away so is on most of the night.
Neighbour has form for being a tad difficult so would like to know where I stand legally before knocking on his door and having a chat.
Suppose we could always take the advantage and reenact an escape from Colditz in our back garden. A bit like Shakespeare in the Park. But shit and filled with resentment and tired kids with mole like eyes Confused

Im probably going to get stung/flamed for asking this, but Does he only 'sunbathe' in his budgies when your children are out there? or You?

Is he doing it for /to Get your attention ? Maybe ?

I have four of the fuckers shining at my house..two across the road shine into our upstairs bedroom, though we have blackouts they do shine in around the edge..luckily no one sleeps in the downstairs bedroom as it floods that. Next door has one that if I sit in the living room chair it catches your eye.

The worst on is at the back..as it is a bungalow it is fixed quite low but shihes just over the fence and into youe eyes if you are at the kitchen or dining room window..I fantasise about putting a great big mirror at the top of the fence.

In an old house I lived in, my security light in tne front porch did this, everytime a car went past or a cat strolled by. I didn't know, my bedroom was at the back. A neighbour told me and said you can put black tape over parts of the sensor to narrow the area it triggers at. He helped me do it too, very helpful of him, he was a former policeman so was obviously used to it.
So maybe sneak in all cat burglar like with some black tape? Obviously they won't do anything about the cat burglar as the light goes on and off all the time anyway.

From what I remember when people on mum and dad's estate put their's up (new builds) by law it can only shine on your property (might be mentioned in the above links but I didn't click through). Otherwise it counts as a nuisance (see pps), you are allowed to have sleep in your own bed without being disturbed!

Some of you will know from previous threads that I'm out really early with my dog. The number of bloody stupid security lights we can set off is incredible. When we've done it once, we cross the road (or walk in the road - safe enough at that time of day!) to try to avoid doing this, but even on the other side of the road we can set some off. It's ridiculous, and, as OP says, it's like playing escape from Colditz!

The fucking COUNCIL put up a super bright security light on the block of flats opposite our bedroom window. This replaced a perfectly reasonable security light that pointed DOWNWARDS not straight into our bedroom.

Blackout curtain only JUST stops it, if the curtain isn't practically nailed to the wall then its terrible.

I complained. A lot. Apparently the councils right to shine lights trumps our right to not have a light shining into the bedroom. I did consider paying a gang of teenagers to throw rocks at it... JOKE

you can take action yourself against the council for causing a statutory nuisance. have a word with citizens advice and they will tell you how to do it. not as difficult as it sounds either and usually gets them to do something about it. also speak to your local councillor to put pressure on them to sort it out. this is when nagging can be very effective.

Watching with interest. Do you like near me OP? Grin we have a similar issue.
Both DCs bedrooms back on to the garden too and it is so bright. I'm not sure as someone told me they may be asked to take it down if it's a certain height and the light covers a large area. Thankfully it doesn't bother my DCs that much as they have heavy curtain which blocks most of it out. But it can be very annoying when it goes off several times a night.
