Seventeen Loads of Washing... I'm not am I?

AIBU in the slightest? Seventeen (spelt out so you're sure it's not a typo). 17 loads of washing this week I have done and put away. (As well as working 72+ hours) I accept I am a little bit OCD about the sheets and towels being on a hot wash alone and that only white things go in the white wash but I do not understand how this household can make so much damn washing!?!!! These are all full loads.

AIBU to ask how many loads you do on an average week, if towels and bedding are done at least once a week and if 22 flannels are an average weeks usage in your household?? I probably am but please ...tell me they are not going to put "now we have no clean clothes to wear" on my gravestone?

There has to be an easier way than this... Surely?

1 a day on average. There are 6 of us

Plomino · 17/04/2016 19:36

7 of us here and easily hit about 24 loads a week . But then that's doing all the bedding on one week , which is about 2 loads by itself Plus at least 2 or 3 loads of towels - 6 people bathe daily and the towels get more than one use but it's still 3 loads . We actually have two washing machines to keep up with it , and the animals have their own machine as well , which does at least one load a week . And we're not a 'use once and wash it family ' but I have a very muddy sport , and we're outside a lot , so stuff needs washing .

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 17/04/2016 19:36

As an aside, OP, what are you doing working 12 hours, six says a week?!

witsender · 17/04/2016 19:38

Every other day, plus a towel wash and a linen wash. There are 4 of us. I don't separate my whites though.Shock

witsender · 17/04/2016 19:41

That said, some days like today I do an extra load just cause it is sunny and will rain tomorrow. We don't have a tumble dryer so I like to make the most of the weather!

Haroldplaystheharmonica · 17/04/2016 19:48

It honestly worries me that so many people on here do not give a shit about the environment. 17 loads a day? Disgusting. And probably all on washes over 40°.

You simply do not need to wash towels after detuned use. FFS, are you not clean after you get out of the shower?

I'm not usually bothered too much by things on here but I'm really pissed off with how some people live on here.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 17/04/2016 19:52

If you wash under 40 degrees, it's basically germ soup.

TiggerPiggerPoohBumWee · 17/04/2016 19:53

A WEEK dear, unclench. Read before frothing.

guineapig1 · 17/04/2016 19:54

We are 4 and can easily hit double figures each week on the washing front.
It easily mounts up:
Bedclothes 2
Towels 2
Lights 2
Darks 1-2
Delicates 1
Sports kits 1-2
Dogs blankets 1
Miscellaneous 1

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 17/04/2016 19:54

Plus, would you really want your dentist leaning over you with 3 day old pants on after drying himself on a moldy old towel with scrubs that are splashed with someone else's biological stains - I wouldn't

Plus, when I worked, I could always smell the people who had yesterday's shirt on - and it looked creased too. So if I could, I'm sure clients could. Not very professional

Crikeyblimey · 17/04/2016 19:55

Reading this I'm beginning to realise why we cause such a strain on the planet's resources! Washing towels after each us is madness. Washing nightwear after ever wear is madness (unless the wearer is in continent or menapausal).

I know we have moved on from stitching ourselves into our winter underwear but ffs, wearing a slouchy shirt and comfy trousers after work each evening for a couple of days is not going to kill anyone nor is using the same towel two or three times.

AngelBlue12 · 17/04/2016 19:55

7 people and I do about 6 loads a week :)

MarianneSolong · 17/04/2016 20:02

I don't get that intimate with my dentist. He checks my teeth, that's all.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 17/04/2016 20:05

I think 3 day old pants would honk - and when Grinyour reclined, you're near that level

I wonder if Mrsmorton is about - don't think she went to the same uni but at DH's they were told clean pants everyday Grin

BoGrainger · 17/04/2016 20:12

I agree Harold.

teacherwith2kids · 17/04/2016 20:12

Clean pants, socks, tights and 'proper' shirts every day here.

However skirts, trousers, jumpers / fleeces / hoodies and polo-type or T-shirts (especially the ones the DCs wear in the evenings after school) definitely don't get washed after every wear.

Sports and dance wear gets washed after each use, as it is sweaty.

We have no dryer, so everything either has to be dried outside or inside on drying racks, and i do think that curts down on laundry as well - it's simply not possible to 'wash today and wear tomorrow', so the question 'could i just hang this over a chair and re-wear it tomorrow' has more meaning.

And as others have said, 'full load' here really does mean 'full'. Usually 10 shirts (DC uniform) + 2 of DH's shirts + 3x white sheets = a white load, for example.

OnlyTheWelshCanCwtch · 17/04/2016 20:25

I honestly don't know how people manage without a drier!

freyapop · 17/04/2016 20:25

I can't believe how much washing some people do. Is it actually dirty though? Have people got so used to thinking it's disgusting if it isn't washed daily that they don't actually care if it actually is before bunging it in the wash??

If you shower daily and don't sweat much surely your clothes don't get that dirty!

2 loads a week here for 2 people - one dark and one white/light colours. Towels and bedding get washed as and when (usually when they don't smell nice and fresh anymore.)

landrover · 17/04/2016 20:40

Don't forget, no washing machines on at night for safety reasons!!! Grin

hibbleddible · 17/04/2016 20:40

I've been reading this thread Shock

Around 5 washes a week here, and there are 2 adults and 2 DC plus I use reusable nappies.

rallytog1 · 17/04/2016 20:52

4 of us - 2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 newborn.

I do about 6-7 loads a week. Clothes get washed when they're dirty/smelly. Towels and bedding get washed when I get round to it.

banivani · 17/04/2016 20:59

4 adults, 1 child. I book the laundry room once a week and do 4-5 loads. White/pale 60 degrees, dark 60 degrees, white/pale 40 degrees, dark 40 degrees, and a gentle/hand wash load. But then I've become filthy and our sheets aren't changed often enough. Blush

RiverTam · 17/04/2016 21:01

Please can someone explain why young children (not babies (sticky/weey/pooey/dribbly) or teenagers (sweaty) need their bedding washed weekly? Their bedding can't get that dirty in a week!

ShtoppenDerFloppen · 17/04/2016 21:12

I am behind (DD has been in hospital), so by the time I catch up there will probably have been 16 loads. For a family of 5, I generally do 8 per week.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 17/04/2016 21:14

My young dc are sweaty sleepers, no idea why, no heating on at night. And though they don't smell I don't like the idea of a stale bed for them. I'd rather wash it so its nice and fresh for them.
