...to think clean floors and dogs are incompatible?

We've just moved house. For almost two years my lovely parents put up with me, DH, the two DCs, our two dogs and two cats (they also have a cat and dog). They have a large house and the dogs spent most of the time in the 'sun lounge' so all the living room floor had to content with was the cats and kids (granted that was more than enough considering autistic kids' tendencies to throw Cheerios around mid-meltdown). The soil there is also pretty sandy so dries quickly and doesn't really track much mud inside.

In the new house, however, the garden leads straight into the dining room/living room (open plan) with some weird painted wooden floor. The soil here is regular mud and it's been raining quite a but the last few days.

AIBU to think we're never going to have clean floors except for the five minutes directly after wiping a wet towel or cloth around the place halfheartedly with my foot mopping?

Do other people with dogs and no extra room to put them in manage to have clean floors and if so how? They're big dogs (German shepherd and husky) and within seconds the floor is just covered in mud when they come in from the garden.

my cat and dog are a tag team in bringing in dirty paws and then throwing up on the floor. Drives me mad. Sofa is filthy too as the dog constantly scratches the blankets off them. Now why would she do that?

SquidgeyMidgey · 16/04/2016 23:39

Tumbleweed fur Grin yes, every morning under the radiator...

BigDamnNCFail · 16/04/2016 23:45

The German shepherd leaves a lot of floating tumbleweed hair everywhere but the husky...now that's something else. For a lot of the year barely a hair come off her even when you brush her but twice a year all her undercoat comes out and for weeks massive clumps come flying out of her. She gets up and there's a perfect white image of where she's been lying in thick fur. She's the first husky I've owned and I was not expecting it when it first happened!

One of ours is a pom. He moults all year round. The other two are cockers who we have cut short as they love swimming but they constantly smell of pond. It's a good job they're cute.

On the flip side, my darling dog died last year and it was clear fairly soon that he had played a significant part in keeping the kitchen floor free of debris. Two weeks after he passed away, I was hugely depressed, totally grief stricken AND had to start sweeping the sodding floor Sad

Obviously we now have a new dog Grin

A steamer is what you need, bloody amazing! And fully tiled downstairs. When my elderly dog was incontinent, the steamer was a bloody life saver! (No dog anymore, sadly Sad)

MrsJayy · 16/04/2016 23:51

My dog is a short haired collie god knows where the fur comes from it settles in corners in clumps

landrover · 16/04/2016 23:52

We are still finding the tumbleweed hair after 3 months Sad

AmpersandRea · 16/04/2016 23:54

3 dogs and our floors are never clean. The tumbleweed is just ridiculous. I have taken to hoovering the worst culprit; the daft dog actually enjoys it.

BigDamnNCFail · 16/04/2016 23:55

Sorry for the dog losses Noel and land. Flowers

As much as I moan about our pets making the place muddy, throwing up, getting under my feet, making noise just as the DSs are falling asleep, shedding fur everywhere, scratching up the carpets and deciding they suddenly desperately need to go out/come in just as I sit down with a cup of tea every bloody time, I wouldn't swap them for anything.

Waits for all the doggy pics to arrive Smile

YANBU. Since accepting this, I have been much happier. I do encourage paw wiping at the door but it doesn't always happen. Dog doesn't shed though, which definitely makes things easier.

Niklepic · 17/04/2016 00:04

This is the shredder. He's been in this position since 6pm. Snoring his little head off.

Downstairs is tiled or wood. It is clean for a few brief moments in a day because our garden is heavy clay and still so waterlogged/flooded that our Labrador paddles filth through every time she goes out for a mooch. Then is covered in mud after our proper field walks.
I have decided to deal with this once a day. It hurts, muddy floors take some accepting, but is better for my blood pressure than constantly wielding the mop only to have a muddy creature literally 'dog' my footsteps.

BreconBeBuggered · 17/04/2016 00:25

My floors are filthy. I blame DH for his muddy hobby, rather than point the finger at the dog. Our last 2 dogs loved grooming, brushing and all kinds of fuss. Current dog is much cuddlier but it has to be on his terms. Moulting could be contained if he'd allow a daily brushing, but no. He hides behind the sofa if you so much as try to towel him dry.
SIL's floors are magnificent, but her spaniel spends a lot of time in her crate.

MrsJayy · 17/04/2016 00:45

Aww landrover your late dog was beautiful

I found myself spot cleaning the kitchen floor for the fourth time the other day and thought 'Sod it, life's too short'. If ShadowDog thinks his paws are wet, he'll wait by the door to have them dried, but mud does not equal wet, in his mind. It's a good job I love the little git.

Mommawoo · 17/04/2016 07:16

We have a labrador. The hair. My god the hair.

(Sobs)

JeVoudrais · 17/04/2016 07:19

Ours go out via conservatory and that leads into kitchen. I put a long runner towel down and the big dog friends his own feet and I dry the little one's feet. When people come round I chuck towels in washing machine.

JeVoudrais · 17/04/2016 07:20

That should say dries not friends Confused

Mominatrix · 17/04/2016 07:24

I have very clean floors and a dog. The dog is a non-shedding crossbreed, so that helps. Second, there, the dogs paws are washed or at least wiped with baby-wipes each time she comes in from outside. Takes a couple minutes, but keeps my white floors white. Last, floors are hoovered and cleaned every day.
