To think that people should be hosed down before getting on the bus

because most of them fucking stink. The stench of musty clothes, stale fags and food makes me want to heave. And why do people insist on eating on the bus? Why can't people have a good wash and wear clean clothes before getting on public transport?

That's an idea, Whisky. It's tempting to invest on a supersoaker, but the other commuters might take issue with it.

RichardHead · 15/04/2016 21:49

Am I right in thinking you have ASD flowers? Are you hypersensitive to smell?

ParadiseCity · 15/04/2016 21:53

When we had foot and mouth the countryside was full of disinfectant baths. They could all be relocated to bus stops. Problem solved.

FlowersAndShit · 15/04/2016 22:04

This was at lunchtime so i'd doubt most of them had been at work all day. Some idiot sat behind me on an almost empty bus and started chomping on her crisps for about 30 minutes. I find that the older gentlemen/pensioners tend to smell musty and stale. Some other bloke with a beanie stank of dog shit and wet dog. Maybe I just live in a shithole?

Richard Yes but I wouldn't say I'm hypersensitive to smell.

Stale fags, kappa track suits, Kfc, and fake Burberry?

Belugh!

""I find that the older gentlemen/pensioners tend to smell musty and stale""

That can't always be helped, for a variety of reasons.

I agree that some people could do with upping their personal hygiene, but you won't get support on here, because there's an awful lot of MNers who don't wash daily, but swear that they never smell.

I have eaten on a bus, but only at the back and not if it isn't empty around me.

PresidentOliviaMumsnet · 15/04/2016 22:45

ahem

NadiaWadia · 15/04/2016 23:36

'Most of them', eh? Really?

sallysparrow157 · 15/04/2016 23:58

i once took the bus home having been in alton towers all day as the medical support person with a group of paediatric oncology patients. The kids took great delight in absolutely drenching me on the pirate boat things which was great till i had to get on the bus. Soaking wet and stinking of alton towers pond water (which is not fragrant...). I was however very aware that I was the smelly person on the bus that day and stood by the door!

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/04/2016 00:21

In all honesty, when I was getting the bus to work I probably saw the least pleasant cross section of society possible. Not usually on the morning bus. However the bus I caught is the biggest bus route in my city so the odds of getting unpleasant sorts was higher than average.

YANBU I live in London and can't believe how many people with BO get on the bus. It's disgusting.

Babymouse · 16/04/2016 03:51

Sit by a window and open it?

6cats3gingerkittens · 16/04/2016 04:26

Open a window on a bus!!???
Do you want to die very much before your time. Where I live it results in swearing, the window bring slammed shut with great force and sometimes physical violence. But, never ever in any fresh air.

angelos02 · 16/04/2016 04:54

Since when was it assumed that only low earners get the bus?! That's hilarious

WomanScorned · 16/04/2016 05:40

I'm with the OP!
We don't have proper buses, here. Just those silly little shuttles, where the seats are so small that anyone of average human size or above, spills over to your 'half". Squashed up against the window on one side and your vest clad neighbour's sweatynarmpit on the other, dodging cheese 'n' onion debris as they describe their fungal toenail infection to the reluctant stranger 2 rows in front, is no fun.
Even if you did have enough room on your lap, alongside your share of next door's 14 shopping bags and spread out thigh, there's no wifi, so you can't even distract yourself from the ordeal by doing something on your laptop. It's likely your arms are too tightly pinned to your sides to be able to reach your bag, anyway.
I swear they are stinkier than any other form of public transport, including real buses. Otherwise, why is there always at least one red faced parent whispering 'Shhh, ooh look, a little doggy' in response to their toddler's increasingly loud demands to know why this bus 'smells of wee-wee?'
Yeah, I avoid them if I possibly can.

MsJamieFraser · 16/04/2016 06:18

I think you get smelly people no matter where you go and because bring on a bus is in confined spaces you just smell it more...

I remember being in a local trampoline attraction here and one man literally stunk the place out with his stalr BO and there's BO, it was quite fascinating to watch actually as he has the whole one end to himself, because he was so putrid.

InlandTiger · 16/04/2016 07:12

YANBU to hate the smell. I find buses smelly too (and infuriatingly slow) so usually drive or take taxis. And I agree that eating hot or smelly food on a bus is selfish!

However YABU to assume elderly people can't be bothered to wash. Many struggle with getting in the bath or shower, or are scared of falling so choose to strip-wash at the sink instead. Imagine if you can't stand for long, trying to wash at the sink with a flannel. It's difficult and tiring. Imagine trying to wash and dry your clothes if bending down is difficult/painful. Unless you qualify for help on the NHS or can afford a private cleaner for your laundry, you probably wouldn't wash your clothes as often as you'd like. So yes they might smell musty. You might not be able to wash your hair often or have a proper shower. And I doubt you would care that much. Sense of smell declines with age so you would probably think you smell fine!

Cut them some slack.

As for wet dog smell, I'm with you on that but again not something you can avoid if you have a wet dog at home!

KERALA1 · 16/04/2016 07:20

Yanbu. Disproportionate number of smelly people on the bus. I often have to move as also get motion sick and cannot deal with unwashed stinkers while in motion.

Recently switched back to train. Train travellers fragrant professionals.
